Vitamins are very important for the human body. Lack of vitamins can lead to certain disease conditions. Excess intake of vitamins is also not good. There are many vitamins that are useful for the regular functioning of our body. Thiamine and riboflavin are two of the vitamins that are vital in our body.

Thiamine:

1. It is also known as anti beriberi, anti neuritic and anti-ageing vitamin.
2. Thiamine is very important for the functioning of the nervous system.
3. Thiamine helps in digestive function in our body.
4. Thiamine protects the heart muscles and stimulates the brain function.
5. It also helps in preventing constipation.
6. It can be used as a diuretic.

Sources of thiamine:

Thiamine can be found in various natural foods. Some of the sources are wheat germ, yeast, cereals, pulses, nuts, peas, legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, milk, egg, banana and apple.

Thiamine can also be found in the outer layer of whole grains. This is the reason why highly polished grains are not good for health. They tend to remove the vitamins from the surface of the grains.

Deficiency of thiamine:

Thiamine deficiency in the human body can cause various serious complications. The problems that can be caused by thiamine deficiency are:
1. Impairment of the digestive system and chronic constipation.
2. Loss of weight
3. Diabetes
4. Mental depression
5. Nervous exhaustion
6. Weakness of the heart

Daily intake of thiamine: 2 milligram of thiamine should be consumed as part of the diet. For children, the consumption should be at least 1.2 milligrams. The need for this vitamin increases during illness, stress and surgery. It is also required during pregnancy and lactation. It can also be used to treat conditions like digestive disorders, neuritis and other nervous system problems.

Precaution: When large amount of thiamine is given, it should be made sure that other vitamins of the B group are also consumed. This is because, if only one type of vitamin B group is taken, then the other groups may be excreted by urine, leading to various health complications.

Riboflavin:

Riboflavin is also called as vitamin B2.It is very essential for growth and general health. It is necessary for healthy eyes, skin, nails and hair.
It helps to eliminate sore mouth, lips and tongue.

Sources: Green vegetables, milk, cheese, egg, seeds, citrus fruits and tomatoes.

Deficiency of this vitamin can cause burning sensation of legs, lips and tongue. It can also cause wrinkles on face and arm.

Intake of riboflavin can help in treatment of cataracts and other eye ailments. It can also treat digestive disturbances, nervous depression, general debility and certain types of high blood pressure.
