Importance of Vitamin K in maintaining health and preventing diseaseBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Food and Drinks | Post Date: 2009-07-31
Vitamins are very important for the human body. Lack of vitamins in the food we eat can lead to various disease conditions. Excess intake of vitamins may also be detrimental to health. There are many vitamins that are useful for the regular functioning of our body. Vitamin K is a very important vitamin that prevents haemorrhage. Vitamin K: 1. It is a fat soluble vitamin. 2. It is very important for the clotting of blood. This helps in saving the lives of thousands of people who are caught in road traffic accidents. These people would have bled to death if not for the presence of Vitamin K in the blood that helped it to clot. 3. Vitamin K helps prevent excessive bleeding. 4. Vitamin K prevents excessive menstrual flow in women. 5. It is very important for the normal functioning of the liver. 6. Vitamin K is essential for the energy producing activities of the tissues, particularly the nervous system. Sources of Vitamin K: Vitamin K can be found in various natural foods. Some of the sources are cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, alfalfa, yogurt, soybeans, wheat and oats. Vitamin K is produced by bacteria in the healthy intestines of human beings. This is a natural source of Vitamin K that is produced in the body. Deficiency of Vitamin K: Vitamin K deficiency in the human body can cause various serious complications. The problems that can be caused by Vitamin K deficiency are: 1. Excessive bleeding during menstrual cycles in women. 2. Bleeding in any injuries. 3. Longer time will be taken for clotting of blood. 4. Severe injuries and nose bleeds can prove fatal due to decreased clotting and increased loss of blood. Daily intake of Vitamin K: 70-140 mcg of Vitamin K should be consumed as part of the diet. For children, the consumption should be at least 35-75 mcg. It is especially necessary in some new born children. This is because the gut of these children is sterile and may not produce Vitamin K naturally. So to prevent hemorrhages, extra supplements of Vitamin K should be administered. This is very essential if the mothers have been given anti coagulant therapy. Precaution: When large amount of Vitamin K is given, it could cause complications like Vitamin K toxicity. In premature children, excess Vitamin K can lead to kidney disorders and also jaundice and anemia. This should act as a deterrent for people who keep taking various Vitamin supplements. These Vitamin supplements should be taken only if prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.
