Impact of migration : Increased incidences of HIVBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Others | Post Date: 2009-06-28
Migration is movement of a group of people from one area to another. The reasons for migration are many. The reason may be to have a better quality of life. The person may also migrate to give education to the children or to support the family. Migration has many advantages for the individual, the community he is migrating from and also to the community he is migrating to. One of the disadvantages is the spread of disease. As people migrate from one area to another, they spread the diseases that were prevalent in their place. There is also a chance of getting newer diseases from the place they are migrating to. The most important disease that has also caught the attention of the world is the spread of Human Immuno deficiency Virus (HIV). This can later lead to AIDS. AIDS itself can be a cause of migration. This is especially true in African countries, where whole families or villages get wiped out due to this disease. People also migrate due to stigma from their community. People migrate after their partners death to search for job / food for them and their children. Migrants are also vulnerable to HIV because: 1. Workers: Workers such as truck drivers, miners and construction workers lead a life separated from their partners. So they may have multiple sexual partners leading to the spread of HIV. This causes a rampant spread of the disease from one geographic location to another. 2. Abuse: Migrant workers are also vulnerable to abuse that may include rape. They may not have a say in their own life. This may also increase the incidence of HIV. This is especially true in the case of the weaker sections of the society including women and children. Their employers and supervisors exploit them. 3. Health care: Migrants often lead a life with poor health care facilities. This may increase the chance of getting the disease. Even if they get the disease, there is little or no facility to treat their condition. These migrant populations need increased health care facilities at a subsidized rate. They also should be taken care of by support groups that will help them to live a life with good quality. Those who are affected by the disease should have adequate treatment with anti retro viral drugs. Governments and non-governmental organizations should prioritize care for these people. This will also help in the control of the spread of the disease. Article Source: http://www.saching.com About Author / Additional Info: I am a physiotherapist by profession. A writer by interest.
