Vaccinations or Immunizations are an important in a childs life. It starts, in the infant stage when the baby is 1 month old through 18 years of age.

What is a vaccine:
Every human has immune system. This immune system is the one that helps the body fight against the invading bacteria and virus that are called antigens. The system produces protein called antibiotics to fight them. Vaccines contain these antigens similar to the one produced in our body or parts of antigens that cause diseases, but the antigens in vaccines are either killed or greatly weakened. When they are injected into fatty tissue or muscle, vaccine antigens are not strong enough to produce the symptoms and signs of the disease but are strong enough for the immune system to produce antibodies against them. So through vaccination, children develop immunity without suffering from the actual diseases that vaccines prevent.

Benefits of Immunizations:
Immunizations is preventive measure to safeguard a child from illnesses and death caused by infectious diseases. Vaccines protect children by helping prepare their bodies to fight often serious, and potentially, deadly diseases. As the saying goes 'Prevention is better than cure', Immunizations prevent disease in the people who receive them and protect those who come into contact with the ones who are unImmunized. By getting Immunized, you not only protect yourself rather help protect the entire community as it slows down or stops the disease outbreaks.

Diseases that can be prevented by Immunizations:
It is very important that the new borns, babies and toddlers get the scheduled vaccinations as they can all be exposed to germs and contagious illness from parents, people at home, going to school mingling with several other kids in the class. Vaccines are responsible for the control of many infectious diseases like measles, whooping cough, diphtheria, polio, rubella (German measles), haemophilus influenza type b (Hib), mumps, diptheria, rabies, small pox, tuberculosis and tetanus. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure that their kids get immunized as per the schedule.

Immunizations for adults:
Vaccinations taken in childhood will protect throughout their life. But some, might have missed certain in their childhood, or that concept may not be available then, now with newer vaccines we can even get vaccinated for tetanus booster shots, flu shots, chicken pox etc, as per doctors advice. Also there are several vaccinations that should be obtained when you are travel
internationally.

Side effects:
Vaccinations may have some mild side effects, like fever, rash, swelling in the area where the shot was given, vomitting, mild aches etc. Physicians recommend giving the child one dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) after the vaccine is given. Severe side effects or serious reactions are rare in that case get proper advise from physician.

Different researches has been going on to find out if there is a relationship between vaccines and autism. Autism is a brain disorder that causes developmental disability. Some parents and others have concerns that autism is related to vaccination. But the weight of the evidence indicates that vaccines are NOT associated with autism. (As per CDC - center of disease control)

Immunization record:
Most importantly, make sure you record all your vaccination. This is vital, specially in the case of children. Only after verifying immunization record, and seen that the child has got all the shot at scheduled time, children get admissions in school.

Get Immunized, safeguard against disease and live healthy!
