Illegal immigrants are pouring into the United States. I know this from having worked in the construction industries. Pro-immigration rallies and anti-immigration rallies alternated with equal fervor, while the number of illegal immigrants living in the country continued to grow towards 20 million. It's true that immigrants want to work when they get to America. The get jobs as soon as they can and yes, they are willing to work cheaply. Immigrants not only work cheap, but are willing to work seven days a week if asked. They fill jobs like construction laborer, electrician, HVAC, plumbing, landscapers, dishwashers, and basically they fill the jobs that Americans would rather have higher pay on. It's easy to see that the employer benefits from paying cheaper labor for the same job offered to an American. If an employer is paying $15 an hour for a construction labor position and say another guy is willing to do the same job for $10 an hour, the employer is sure to higher the guy who is willing to work for less pay and who happens to be Mexican. The employer has no obligation to pay the higher price.

What everyone seems happy to ignore is that the other guy - the more expensive laborer, the guy whose job was "stolen" from him, also benefits. He benefits from living in a society in which jobs are given to the most competitive job-seekers. He benefits because when good can be produced at a cheaper price, America's economy grows. The benefits of living in a country in which people are free to seek the best product for their money overwhelmingly outweigh the short-term inconvenience of losing one job and finding another. The result of that freedom is America which is a country where your property and life are protected. A country full of cutting edge medical treatments, beautiful houses, twenty-plex movie theaters, spotless supermarkets, Wal-Marts full of affordable merchandise, and cities sparkling with life and second chances.

It is my opinion that immigrants 'steal" jobs and drive the job market's pay to lower salaries and less benefits for the American worker. Immigrants are a drain on government services as a whole. Is the recent surge in immigration good or bad for the United States? There's little question that U.S. immigration policy needs a major overhaul. The recent surge in immigrants is overwhelming the social services of many border counties, especially in states with relatively small budgets where resources are already stretched thin.

Clearly federal assistance to our border States is urgently needed. But as President Bush pointed out, building walls along U.S. borders won't work. As we found with efforts to stop illegal drug importation, those who wish to find a way do so. Every time you build a 10-foot wall, someone will come along with an 11-foot ladder.

It is my opinion that America should spend money on protecting our U.S. borders from illegal immigration rather than funding the war in Iraq
