Skimming is a hi - tech method by which thieves capture the identity of a person. Identity thieves try to capture the personal and bank account information from the various identity cards of people. The identity thieves skim the information from identity cards including the credit card, driver's license and sometimes even from the passport. This is because of the increased use of smart cards for these identity cards. These smart cards are not really smart, because they are the cards that are used by the identity thieves to skim the information. Skimming: Skimming is the easy method of identity theft. It is done using an electronic device that can be purchased from online companies for as little as fifty dollars. These devices are called as skimmers. These are like the credit and debit card swipers that are used in various shops and cafes. The device is very small and so is difficult to identify. It is used in almost all places by many of the shop keepers or businesses themselves to earn quick money by cheating their customers. When the cards are swiped as part of the payment process, the thieves who try to steal your money, just swipe the card on their skimmers. The machine reads all the card details and stores these details. The individuals are able to use the data to take money away from your account without your knowledge. Identity thieves: There are many identity thieves on the prowl on the internet. They use the details of the person who being gullible may give out personal details in any website or as part of a payment process. These details are gathered by software that are dedicated to so this. These software are also able to withdraw money from the accounts in the banks of the people who gave out their personal details. Care and precautions to take to prevent identity thieving: 1. Genuine payments: Do not give out personal details unless you are sure of genuine nature of the particular company that you are dealing with. Many of the people who give out their details do not think twice initially, but later feel sorry. It is better to think before parting with details that can make you paupers. 2. Pay in online secure methods: There are many secure methods of making online payments. One of the important and simple modes of paying online is using PayPal. Their service is good, though they charge a percentage of the transaction. 3. Never let your card get out of sight: Credit cards that are used for payments should be used by the credit card owners themselves and should not be given to another person to swipe. These are some of the important methods by which you will be able to reduce the risk of being cheated by people who do not have any trouble stealing your money. Many people are being careful these days as there is wide knowledge of the presence of identity thieves, but there are also isolated cases where people lose large sums of money to these anti social elements.
