IIT Bombay was the second Indian Institute of Technology to be established (in 1958 with assistance from UNESCO and with funds contributed by the Soviet Union). The site chosen for the institute was Powai (also its current location), eighteen miles (29 km) from the city of Bombay (Mumbai), with an area of 550 acres (2.2 km˛) which was given by the then Bombay State Government. The campus is surrounded by Powai lake and Sanjay Gandhi national park and is in close proximity to the Vihar lake. It is extremely green and free from the city pollution. The campus has hostels numbered 1 to 13 and Tansa house for accommodating most of the students. Hostels 10 and 11 are girls hostels and rest are for boys.

Admissions to this institute are done through JEE, JAM, GATE, CEED, JMET. the entrance to the most popular B.Tech program are done through JEE. In the recent years, JEE entrance has emerged as one of the toughest competitive examinations in the country. JEE coaching centres, correspondences, test series etc. have grown in leaps and bounds. Kota, Hyderabad etc. have developed this as one of their major industries.

Most students prepare for two years before giving the examination and some of them even drop an year to clear it. Of the 311,258 candidates who appeared in the examination conducted on April 13, 2008, 8,652 candidates have been declared qualified to seek admission, giving a selectivity of 1 in 36 overall, and 1 in 45 for the 6,872 seats in IITs. The intake in IIT's will increase for the next two years considering the reservation quota implementation for OBC category. Major coaching classes in Kota are Bansal Classes, Resonance, Career Point, Narayana etc. The correspondence courses of FIIT-JEE and Brilliant Tutorials are also very popular among students.
