The world is slowly increasing with people who have become old. In fact the number of elderly people may outnumber the number of young people n this world soon. The main reason for this is because of the increased medical care that is available for all kinds of diseases. This has increased longevity and also prevented the death of many individuals who would have otherwise died.

This is great for the families that have many elders because they carry a rich experience of life that is unparalleled. The world as a whole does not think so. There are many instances of elderly people being sent to old age homes against their will. There are many instanced where the children do not take care of their elderly parents.

The reason is that the younger generation keeps forgetting that these old people were the ones who cared for them early in their lives. The only thing that is in the mind of the present generation is to enjoy life and also to have all comforts in their life. They do not remember the comforts that they got from the previous generation. There are certain things that this generation should strive to do to keep the people of the older generation happy. They are:

Treat them with respect:
Any person likes to be treated with respect. The older generation especially deserves the respect. They lived in a time where comforts were not present, but they managed to provide their children with the best they could afford. As people get older, they may think that even people who are laughing at a joke might be laughing at them. This should make the younger generation understand their actual needs and treat them with respect they deserve.

Give them their space:
As people become old, they may become insecure. They need their space to be secure in it. The younger generation should try as much as possible to give them enough space so that their freedom is not curbed. The older people may have certain ritualistic behaviour. They do not like people to discourage them from doing it. Another important thing to remember is that as people get older, their activities get reduced.

Honour them:
As younger people, we have to honour each and every person who is old for the sake of their age. This will make them feel better and happy.

Pay attention to what they say:
Old people have a lot of experience in various matters. They may seem garrulous, but most of what they talk makes sense if we really listen to them. This is the reason why the younger generation people have to listen to the older people.

Understand their needs and take care of them:
As people become old, there are more needs that they have. The needs may be medical, physical or just psychological. The youngsters in the family have to make sure that the needs of the old people are taken care of.

Talk to them:
Old people usually feel lonely. This is especially true when their spouse is not present. At these times, the younger generation people have to make sure that they spend some time talking to the old people. This will make the older people feel that they have family or even someone who is with them in their troubles.
