Burns is one of the common causes of accidents. Burns can occur directly due to fire accidents or can also occur in spilling of boiling liquids. Burns can also occur due to the electric shock. Many people do not really know how to treat burns.

Each kind of burns is treated differently. The treatment can also vary according to the extent of the burns and the age of the patient. This article tells of the initial treatment of a person after the burns occurs.

For minor burns that have not caused the formation of blisters, the burned part of the body should be kept in cold water at once and it should be left for at least ten minutes. This will prevent the burn from becoming worse. For a small burn that has not caused blister formation, no other treatment is necessary. All other burns should be immediately shown to a doctor for advice and treatment.

For those people who are unable to go to the hospital immediately, there are a few guidelines that can be followed:

1. Reassure the patient and make sure that the patient is in a comfortable position. Aspirin can be given for the pain. Plenty of water should be taken in to replace the water lost by burns.

2. Any blister present should not be broken, as they will help the ulcer to heal.

3. Ice should not be applied to any burn injury.

4. If any blister has broken due to any reason, then the area should be cleaned and washed gently with soap and boiled water that has been cooled. This will prevent any infection.

5. It is very important to keep the burn clean. It should be protected from any source of infection like flies, dirt and other things.

6. Certain places follow application of things like grease, butter, coffee and other such things. This should be avoided at all costs.

In case of any infection occurring in the area, cloth soaked in warm salt water can be applied and changed three times a day. Antibiotics will be necessary, so a physician should be consulted.

Prevention of burns:
Burns can occur due to boiling liquids. Proper and safe handling of vessels and keeping these away from the reach of children can prevent these types of burns.

Proper earthing circuit installed can prevent Burns that are caused by electricity. Tripping mechanism that stops the current flow can also be installed.
