How to prevent Snoring while sleepingBY: Deena David | Category: Self Improvement | Post Date: 2009-10-23
Snoring is a common problem faced by men and women alike. Though women are also likely to snore, the number of men snoring outnumbers the number of women snoring. Snoring can be very minimal in some people to quite a rumbling in other people. Snoring can cause a lot of relationship problems between couples. In fact there have been instances of divorce proceedings that were started because of uncontrolled snoring. The snoring is because of a simple reason. When we are awake and breathe, we take a deep breath once in a while, but when we sleep, the breathing is smooth and rhythmic. In this process, the air traveling into the body and outside the body has to go through the mouth and the throat. When the airway is small, the air goes through tough resistance. This leads to a vibration of the surrounding tissues that causes the snoring sound. Methods of preventing snoring: There are many methods of preventing snoring, which are listed in this article. 1. Increase your exercise: The relationship between exercise and the level of snoring is little known to many. Actually when the fitness levels of individuals are less, then there are more chances of tissues blocking the air way. This can lead to the snore. Fitness levels f increased reduces the excess tissues and prevent snoring. 2. Smoking: The most important cause of snoring is smoking. When a person is a chronic smoker, there is a lot of mucus secretions that are present in the airway. This prevents the smooth movement of air from the outside to the lungs and causes the snoring sound. The method of preventing snoring in these people is to reduce and ultimately stop smoking. 3. Position of sleep: The position in which a person sleeps also as a role to play in the presence or absence of snoring. When people sleep on their back, the snoring increases. This is because when people lie on their back, there is more chance of the airway being blocked by the tongue or any secretions that get collected. Sleeping on the side reduces this problem. So people who sleep on their sides snore lesser than those who sleep on their backs. 4. Pillow: The presence or absence of pillows is also another reason for the snoring. When a person sleeps with a big pillow, the neck is bent into a forward leaning position. When there is no pillow, the neck can be bent backwards. Both these positions cause the neck to have a kink and this in turn will cause a block in the air way. The bend either in the flexed or extended position of the neck is another common reason for the snoring to occur. The best method to prevent snoring is to have a optimal sized pillow that keeps the neck in the neutral position where the neck is neither bent forward or backward. These are some of the most important methods of preventing snoring. Some of these methods may work for you and some other methods may not work. If the snoring does not stop even after you have tried various options, it is better to visit a throat specialist who will be able to do certain tests to identify the other causes of snoring. Some people may even require a simple surgery to reduce the levels of snoring.
