The fear of flying is one of the common problems faced by first time fliers. There are people who do no lose their fear of flying even after traveling by air many times. This is because of the inner fear that is very difficult to remove. The fear of flying can be called by many names including aviophobia among other names. Many people do not know how to overcome the fear of flying. The fear of flying is due to the many air accidents that occur from time to time. This article lists the few ideas that will be helpful to those who wonder how to overcome their fear of flying. The common ideas to overcome the fear of flying are: 1. Positive attitude: The individuals with a positive attitude will be able to cope better on their first flight and overcome their fear. People who are pessimistic and have a negative attitude find it very difficult to be able to overcome their fear of flying. The person can nurture positive attitude by various means. 2. Analyze: The people who are really scared of flying will do well to analyze and realize that the number of deaths due to flying is very less compared to the number of people dying in road accidents. Thinking realistically, the person who is flying will be able to understand that the accidents that they fear will happen to them when they fly can actually occur anywhere. 3. Take a small trip: The next important method of reducing the fear of flying is to make a small trip on a short haul flight. This small trip will help the individual to be able to get used to the idea of flying and at the same time will decrease the time of fear. Once the person is used to flying for a short distance, then the second trip can be a longer one. This kind of gradual increase in the flight duration will help the individual to get used to the idea of flying. 4. Do something on the flight: The individual who has a lot of things to do without thinking of the flight will have less fear than one who has a lot more time to ponder on what is happening. So try to do something entertaining on the flight. Some of the things that the person can do are watching a movie or playing a video or computer game. 5. Think of your destination: Another important thing that can be done to keep your mind away from the flight is to think of the destination. When you keep thinking of the destination and what you are going to do there, the mind is more relaxed. 6. Professional help: There are counselors who will be able to reduce your fear of flying if the fear cannot be modified by the ideas already given. Professional help is rarely necessary, but it will help you gear up for the flight. These are the important methods of overcoming the fear of flying.
