How to keep Eyes Healthy - Avoiding old age eyesight problems

Vision is often considered the most important among the five human senses. Taking care of your eyes is extremely important and there are many things every individual should do to keep the eyes healthy and avoid eyesight problems as we age.

1. Wash your eyes with clean cold water frequently, it helps to relax your eyes.

2. Get regular eye checkups: Visit your eye doctor (ophthalmologist) frequently even if you do not wear glasses. Getting your eyesight checked every year is ideal, if you get eyestrain or frequent headache its the time to get your eye checkup dome, getting eye checkup done frequently helps to prevent diseases like glaucoma and cataract, and help to prevent bigger problems down the line. Anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should get eyes checked atleast once a year. Have an eye exam if you notice any changes in vision, including blurriness, dimness, blind spots, or halos around lights.

3. Always wear good quality glasses:
Do not go for cheap lens, if you happen to wear eye glasses. If your glasses seem to have been scratched and it seems to be giving you blury vision or headache, its time to get a new one. Always keep spaer eyeglasses with you.

4. Working on a computer: Take frequent breaks from computer screens to avoid eye strain. Maintain an appropriate distance from monitor and avoid glare.

5. Wear Sunglasses: Sunglasses protect your eyes from Ultra-violet rays (UV) damage. Direct sun rays can cause heavy damage to eyes.

6. Eat healthy food:
Eat a diet rich in vitamins - vitamin A,C,E beta carotene and omega-3s are considered very good for eyes. carrots and oranges are very good fruits for your eyes.

7. Quit smoking: Smoking increases the risk of developing macular degeneration a problem that grows with aging.

8. Don't take eye injury lightly: Rush to your doctor immediately.

9. Take contact lens out before going to bed: Leaving contacts in too long, especially overnight, can lead to infection.

10.Exercise - A routine exercise improves your blood circulation and oxygen that is needed for eyes like the rest of your body.

11. Avoid rubbing eyes: If your eyes itchy, don't rub them.

12. Keep a suitable distance while reading - Keep the book at a distance of about 30 cm. Well adjust according to the print size. Do not read in dim light.

13. Keep changing focus: Pencil exercise is good but keep change focus to nearby and distant objects, like look outside the window.

14. Take enough sleep - give your eyes the adequate rest they need.

15. Maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol level.

You should always consult your doctor frequently to avoid eyesight problems. Some eye problems are bound to come as we grow older but we should take care of things which we can. I am not a doctor.
