How to identify if your child is on drugs and preventing further addictionBY: Deena David | Category: Family | Post Date: 2009-07-10
With the economic boom that the world saw in the past decade came the many technological advances. This has made the world to develop at a rapid pace. This has made children become more independent. They have become the X Generation. Along with this development has come increased stress in children. This has led them to beat the stress using methods their friends use like drug addiction. This article talks of methods of identifying if a child is on drugs. Alcohol and drug addiction are seen almost everywhere. The increased exposure to such activities and the peer pressure may make our children more susceptible to drug addiction. There are certain methods of identifying if a child is on drugs. They are: 1. Mental turmoil: If your child is undergoing emotional turmoil due to various reasons, it is best to keep a close watch on the child's activities. A child who starts drug or alcohol use will usually have a history of low self esteem, lack of peer acceptance and other such triggering factors. Parents have to keep careful watch on these affected children. 2. Emotional Problems: The child may suddenly become disruptive and destructive. These are signs of emotional problems that may be accompanied by drug or alcohol abuse. Other noticeable changes in the child can be incidents of stealing from the house and also refusing to go to school. Some children may start coming late to the house. 3. Other factors: There are also factors like depression, suicide attempts, unlawful behavior that can be present in an otherwise docile child. These changes are also indicators of drug and alcohol abuse. There are a few ways of preventing the child from indulging in more addiction. This will prevent the child from getting deeper into the mire he has slipped into. 1. Be alert: Parents have to be alert to notice any changes as seen above. When these changes are noticed, parents have to confront their children and find out the problem they are facing and be supportive. Children resort to drugs if they do not find an emotional release. Parent should be the emotional release in such circumstances. 2. Changed attitudes: Parents should not try to blame the child; instead they should try to support the child and bring them out of the depression and their troubles. 3. Professional care: For children who are deep into their addiction, parents need to seek professional advise and treatment as any sudden change in their drug intake habits can lead to aggressive behavior or withdrawal symptoms. Following these ideas and being alert will help to identify if your child is on drugs and will prevent further addiction.
