Gone are the days when people thought of divorce as taboo. These days most people do not attach any significance to marriage. They see it as just another part of life. This leads to increased rates of divorce. A successful married life is quite important in life.

Is there any way of controlling the divorce rates? Can the couples do something to make their marriage work? There are a lot of things that couples can try to make their marriage work. Divorce should be the last step after trying out all the ideas listed below.

So here are a few ideas to try to save your marriage and have a successful married life:

1. Compromise: Ego is one of the worst enemies of marriage. Early in marriage, both the partners should try to compromise with each other instead of becoming egoistic. Compromising and throwing ego out of a marriage is the first and best step couples can do to make their marriage work.

2. Make up before the day is over: Fights and quarrels are a part of every marriage. They should not lead to divorce. In fact small quarrels should be seen as instances to strengthen the marriage. Both the husband and the wife should make up before the day is over. Carrying a fight into the next day by either sulking or not talking leads to further problems.

3. Be contented: Contentment is another thing that couples should have. Never try to look at what other couples have and think that they are better. Being contented in the husband or wife we have will prevent us from causing unnecessary strife in the family and works towards a successful married life.

4. Understand the likes and dislikes of the spouse: Each one of us is different. All of us have our own likes and dislikes. After marriage, we should take the extra effort to find the likes and dislikes of our partner and try to satisfy these likes. When this is done by both of you, the marriage is sure to work.

In case all these fail, still you are not at the end of the road of your marriage. There are many marriage counseling centers available. In these places, each of you are counseled separately and then together in an effort to iron out the differences and make you live together.

All said and done, one thing that will save the marriage is the commitment each of us have towards our partner. Each of us should want to make our marriage work. Once we have this commitment in our married life, we will not take the step to divorce whatever be the situation.
