Before we enter into the 'How to get through' part, here is a statutory warning.

Firstly the Mass Communication course in AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre is a post-graduate course, so you have to complete your graduation before applying. Secondly the course gives an overall introduction to many mass media like Radio ( Jamia has a Radio station of its own - Radio Jamia 90.4 FM) , Photography, Puppetry, Street theatre (These will be in the first year and all are compulsory) and Film( in the second year). So if you know that you have your heart set on something very specific, like film direction or editing, then places like FTII may be a better option. This course aims to prepare you for working at various positions in the media industry especially in relation to production. So if you are looking to explore various media, this is a great course. But be sure, this is what you want before applying. It is a very demanding course and will take up the greater chunk of your two years, if you get through, so you will need your passion for creativity and your interest to get you through.

So having decided, you get your application form and are baffled by the essay part of the application. Relax. Just a basic paragraph on your background and why you want to get into this course, your inclination in media will do. Chances are skim that it'll be brought up at the interview.

So the application is submitted and it's time for the entrance tests and interview. The entrance consists of three parts.

1) The Media Appreciation Test:
In this you will be shown two or three short films. You will be given paper to make notes. You will be allowed to take the notes into the hall where the written part of this test will be held. Just keep an eye out for the editing style, the main theme, music and the other cinematic techniques that the film maker employs and what is s(he) attempting to say through the film. Reading a basic article on how to read a film will help. But the important thing is to be sufficiently technical, but not go overboard with it. They want to see if you are sensitive to these things, do you understand how a film works.

2) The Entrance test:
It will have four to five parts. There will two short answer questions. This will mainly deal with current issues in the news. Like last year there was a question on Taare Zameen pe and also on Nandigram. Then there will be two long answers on the same. You have to have a basic knowledge of the issues, as well as be opinionated about it. Discuss the issue, presenting various viewpoints. Debate it. Interrogate it. Reading up on issues of last year and some basic general knowledge will suffice. I found Frontline quite helpful in this regard and it is also available online in archives. But any current affairs magazine will do. The important thing is for your personal understanding and views on the issue to come through.

The third part will ask you for a visual de scription of any of the topics given. These mainly include scenes from a busy place like a market or fair or railway station etc. Try to be as detailed as possible.

The last part will consist of two pictures which you will be asked to study and write about. Read up on some technical aspects like the use of light and shade, point of emphasis etc. You will be asked to write a short story or essay about the pictures given. Try to link the pictures to some issue or social reality than be too abstract or just describe it visually. Again, your personal interpretation should stand out. Don't think about -‘What will the examiner like to hear' but rather what does this say to me.

This is a lengthy paper so be sure to manage your time well.Make sure you keep an eye out for the weightage of every question and spend time accordingly. It is important to write well and creative writing takes time. But leaving out a question is a bad idea. So make sure you finish the paper. Also there is NO negative marking so attempt all questions. Every section has to be attempted on a seperate sheet of paper, so be sure to do the right section on the right sheet. But you can always ask the invigilator to help in case you mix up.

The Portfolio & Interview

If you get through the entrance, you will have to submit a portfolio of your media related activities. Your portfolio should contain all evidence of your extra-curricular activities. This may include certificates, photographs and CDs of your performances (dance, theatre etc), articles or illustrations published etc. But you don't have to be internationally acclaimed for this to be impressive. Include any creative work you have done - pictures (good ones) you have drawn, your creative writing (published or unpublished- but neatly typed), photographs you've taken, short films you have made ( can be with a simple point and shoot camera or a mobile camera even) etc. The point is to show off your inclination in the field and your creativity.Try to fcus on what you are best at, meaning you don't have to appear the jack of all trades. Even a simple portfolio often outdoes a bulky one.I have discovered in my experience that a more than a certificate, visual proof of your creativity helps. Keep your work original, as you maybe quizzed on your products .You should know the name of the equipment you used to take your pictures, shoot your film etc. Show that you know about the course and be ready to defend your reasons for wanting to get through. This doesn't mean being defensive, but just to show that you know what you are talking about. Try to keep the interview conversational. Talk about your background and interests. But do not bluff. Be confident and sufficiently knowledgeable about the field you claim to be interested in. Good Luck!
