Many people wonder as to how to clean the teeth of babies. The babies are very small and people wonder if it is right to clean the teeth of the small baby. Actually many pediatricians and dentists alike are beginning to say that it is best to start cleaning the teeth of babies as early as possible. In fact the baby's mouth should be cleaned regularly even before the teeth have started developing.

When the baby is born, it will have soft gums and it is obvious that the gums should not be brushed with a brush. If you think as to how to clean the teeth of babies without a brush, then here is the answer and that is to use a gauze or a soft piece of cloth that can be used o wipe the mouth clean. There are some infant tooth brushes that are very soft and will help to get the teeth or gums cleaned without injuring the child.

Various aspects of cleaning the teeth of babies are as listed below:

1. Tooth paste:

The tooth paste should be chosen carefully, Never use a tooth paste that is designed for older people. This is because the paste may contain many chemicals that should not be used by infants. The reason for this is almost all infants and even older children swallow at least half of the tooth paste in their mouth, if not full. The chemicals that have been swallowed can cause many health problems including diarrhoea.

2. Brush:

The brush should be soft and should never have hard bristles. Soft part of the brush is more than enough for the small children to get their teeth cleaned. If you use a harder brush, then you are sure to injure the gums of the baby and this can even start bleeding.

3. Force of brushing:

The force with which you brush the teeth of the baby should be very less. If you use more force, then the baby will again have bleeding injuries.

4. Time of brushing:

The common practice is to brush once in the morning as soon as the child gets up from the bed and again once just before bed. Ideally, it would be best if the practice of brushing the teeth after every meal was practiced, but this is not practically possible at all times. So at least twice a day of brushing should suffice.

5. Teach the child:

The child should start trying to brush the teeth by at least the third year of life. The practice should be ingrained hard into the child as early as possible. This will help the child learn one of the most important habits in life.

These are the important aspects of how to clean the teeth of babies that every parent should know. There are some children with tooth decay early in their life. Adequate brushing and dental care would have prevented those problems. This should be understood when parents teach dental care to their child.
