AIDS is a dreadful disease and you should take up all possible measures to avoid getting infecting by this deadly virus (or transmitting it to others if you have it). You cannot cure AIDS yourself once your trapped in, the maximum that one can do is to try and comfort your friend or relative and let him enjoy the last few months or years of his or her life in the best way possible. To do this you have to ask God for courage and strength.

It is found that 33.6% of children and adults suffer of this disease. Goa ranks seventh statewise for the prevalence of HIV. The full form of HIV is Human Immuno Deficiency Syndrome.

The stage in which the bodies immune system is destroyed and attacked by different groups of diseases /illnesses is called AIDS.

Social contacts are like kissing, hugging, talking, sharing clothes, sharing toilets, shaking hands, sharing of food or plates, light coughing or sneezing, traveling together, mosquitoes and other insects and finally working in the same office do not lead to transmission of AIDS virus.

A person suffering from HIV can be infected by having unprotected sex with an infected partner. About 90 to 95% of HIV infections are due to penetrative sex i.e. without the use of condoms. HIV transmission are greater during anal sex or if ones partner is suffering from STD (Sexually transmitted diseases).

Puncturing of the skin by needles/ sharp instruments infected with HIV also leads to the spreading of AIDS virus.
Those found at a risk are unsterilized contaminated needles, syringes etc. Some examples are during tattooing, ear piercing and acupuncture.

AIDS can also be transmitted from a HIV positive pregnant mother to her child.
There is a 30% chance that the mother will pass the virus to her child before, during or after birth.

Transfusion of HIV contaminated blood and blood products.
The danger comes through donated blood and blood products. So therefore always test the blood and the blood products.

The are several precautions that one should take to protect oneself from this deadly virus, some preventive measures include

1) By being faithful to only one partner.
2) By practicing safe sex.
3) By abstaining from sexual activity, especially with unknown people.
4) Using only tested blood and the blood products.
5) Using only sterilized or disposable syringes, needles, blades etc.

So remember do not share needles or syringes or other sharp instruments that could be contaminated with blood.

Therefore, my dear readers it is always advisable that you do an antibody test like Elisa three months after the last occasion that you might have been at the risk of infection and a second confirmatory test another three months later just to be on the safe side.
