How can flu spread and how long is it contagiousBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-11-15
Flu is a very common problem that can be seen in people around us. Each and every one of us has suffered from flu at least once in our lives. There are many people who have got flu from another person who they have been close to. This is because flu can be spread by droplet infection. This means that a person who has flu may sneeze or cough at times and when they do so, the invisible drops of moisture from their system escapes into the atmosphere. This causes the spread of the flu because when another person is near the person who sneezed, the virus that is present in the moisture can come in contact with the mouth or nose of the healthy person. This will make them sick too. Flu is usually caused by a virus and so it is a problem that can have no remedy. Viruses are the cause for many diseases like Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and other kinds of hepatitis. Viruses also cause diseases such as swine flu, bird flu and other kinds of flu. The important thing that has to be remembered when the person has flu is that the disease will have many symptoms, but the infectious stage of the person may start even before the person shows any signs of the disease. Route of transmission: The droplet infection is the usual method by which the flu usually spreads. It can also spread when the infected person's body fluids come into contact with the body fluids of a normal person and enter the body. This is the usual mechanism of transmission of the disease. Period in which the disease is contagious: The flu is a condition that becomes contagious even before a person manifests the disease. A person may have various signs and the day before these signs and symptoms are evident, the individual can be contagious. The period in which the person is contagious can be up to 5 days after the appearance of the symptoms. This time period changes for people whose immune system is not normal. Many immune system suppressed people may have flu symptoms and may be contagious. So other people around them have the chance of getting the infection even up to two weeks after the first signs of the symptoms of the disease. It is a similar case in children who have decreased immunity and the disease can spread for a longer time from these people because they are infectious for a long time. Signs of flu: There are various signs of flu like sneezing, head ache, mild fever initially and spikes in the temperature. There can also be other kinds of symptoms in other people like running nose. Some kinds of flu may also be fatal in some people. This is evident from diseases like swine flu and avian flu. These are the various signs and symptoms that a person with flu can have and adequate precaution should be taken so that the disease does not spread to other people around the infected person.
