Home remedies for Backache: Tips to get rid of Lower Back Pain problemBY: Tim | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-08-06
Recently I had the worst backache of my life. I am fine now but in the process I learned a lot about back pain and home remedies which help to relieve it. Backache is one of the most common health problems faced by people all over the world. Back pain may be caused because of simple sprain, muscle pull or even dislocation of alignments. The severity of back pain may vary from mild, severe to even chronic. The major reason of backache is because most people injure their back while exercising, lifting heavy weights or lifting objects in an incorrect manner. Back pain may also be associated with old age, calcium deficiency and other medical conditions as well. Back pain should always be taken seriously. Most of the time back pain can be avoided by taking simple precautions like lifting heavier objects by keeping the back straight, taking vitamins and applying common sense. Apply common sense and take advice of your doctor whenever you feel the need to do so. Back pain may be just a minor thing or as severe as slip disc, osteoporosis, Spondylolisthesis, even a tumor. Overall backache is a common problem for people over 50 years of age. Women can also suffer from back pain during menstrual periods. Tips on how to get rid of back pain / Home remedy of Backache: 1. TAKE REST: Taking rest is the best way of relaxing and healing your back. Most doctors advice to take rest on a relatively harder mattress than a soft one. In most cases taking 2-4 days of rest will help you to get rid of your back pain. Even when you return to work, take precautions for atleast 1 more week and refrain from lifting any heavy stuff or making awkward back movements. Water bed is also a great way to relax your back. 2. USE ICE PATCH: Using the ice patch helps to relax your back muscles. It also helps to reduce back pain and even reduce swelling. You can use ice patch for about 5 minutes and repeat it 4-5 times a day. 3. SLEEP LONGER: Sleeping is a natural way in which the body repairs itself. When we sleep, body utilizes energy to repair tissues and relax. You should try to sleep for about 10 hours a day while you are in the process of taking bed rest. 4. MAKE YOUR BACK MUSCLES STRONGER: People who do office jobs do not get enough time to exercise. It is important to do exercise which combines running, stretching and some weight lifting 3-4 times a day. Similarly individuals (especially women) who get old should keep an active lifestyle as well. 5. HEATING PADS: It's interesting that even hot patch can help your back to heal faster. Backache is strange, for some people heat (pads or hot water bottle) works better whereas for others cold patch works better. For others it's a combination of both. So you can do 15 minutes of hot pad therapy and then use a cold pad for 15 minutes, giving a break of 10-15 minutes between the two. Sitting in hot water tub with a little bit of added salt in the water is a great muscle relaxant. 6. START YOUR DAY SLOWLY: In the morning after we wake up, our back muscles are not immediately active to get going. If you recently had backache or have a history of back pain then try to start first 15 minutes of your day slowly, starting from getting off the bed. 7. TAKE A PAIN MEDICINE: Pain medicines and anti-inflammatory pills like Ibuprofen, Advil, Asprin etc .. can help you ward off your back pain and in the process help to heal it faster too. 8. LIGHT MASSAGE: Very light warm oil massage help to get rid of backache faster. Most people do the mistake of rubbing and pressing back harder during the massage, you should avoid that, unless it is being done by a professional therapist. 9. WARM MILK AT NIGHT: Some people feel much better when they take a hot glass of milk before going to bed, use honey instead of sugar. Milk is a natural relaxant. If you are lactose intolerant, then try drinking green tea or herbal tea. 10. USE A BACK BELT: If you are not able to relax for a longer time due to your profession, then use a back belt. Many belts also have a heating and cooling gel. Select a belt which is of your size and does not make you uncomfortable. 11. EMOTIONAL STRENGTH: Do not feel weak or broken, keep your spirits high. A motivated person can ward off their health problem much faster than those who feel completely broken. 12. Acupuncture Therapy: There are scientific and traditional explanations behind how Acupuncture works and helps your back pain. Be very careful because there are many people who call themselves so called 'experts' but all they want is to get money out of you. 13. LEMON REMEDY: Some of the naturopaths suggest that lemon is useful as home remedy for backache. You can take lemon juice with a pinch of salt for about 2 weeks and possibly get some relief. Some people suggest that rubbing garlic and mustard oil also helps. 14. REDUCE WEIGHT: Obesity is a leading cause of backache. Reducing extra weight is helpful for many more health conditions as well. 15. WARM POTATO: A warm Potato Poultice is used for relieving inflammation and congestion. Place poultice on the affected area and remove once it gets cold. If your backache persists or increases, or if your back pain comes back again and again without any apparent reason then do see your doctor.
