Recently we were visited Egypt and while visiting one of the pyramids we saw a European family being very nicely helped by some local Egyptian individual. My first reaction was .. wow wish I find some nice local person like him. I still went ahead and asked this person and he introduced me that he is a local tour guide and gave me his visiting card if I would like to use his services sometime. I was also told that these days we can hire a local tour guide via the internet. After he told me the details, I did some research of my own and decided to share my experience with the web community. Private tourist guides are a great way to really experience in depth a place where you are planning to travel. These days with the blessing of internet you can actually book a private tourist guide on the web. Hiring a personal tour guide can actually customize the whole trip based on what you like and not a one plan fits all approach used by group pre-packaged tours. These tour guides are also helpful for tourists who like to visit a place by themselves as they can give you some insider tips and also overcome the local problems like language and many others. Some websites that I found on the internet for the hiring a private tourist guide are private-guides.com, privateguidesineurope.com and infohub.com/tour_guides/ Tour guides will also tell you to places like great authentic and safe places to eat, drink, nightlife, how to get there and other places which only local's know. They will also make you aware of many local customs and special events taking place. I have personally never used these services but if I were to use them I will check these following: 1. Is he a licensed professional or not and how how much will he charge. 2. Knows your language. 3. Any affiliation with Ministry of tourism. 4. REFERENCES - I will ask for at least 3 references who have recently used his services and talk to them. 5. Talk to him over the phone and judge if they sound the right one for you. 6. If he will pick you up from the airport and if can get you hotel at a discount price. Some private tour guides will also help you to save a lot of money for hotel booking, food and other activities which will basically save more than what you pay for their services. Check with them if they have a backup guide in case this person becomes unavailable at the last minute ( say he becomes sick on your date of arrival). It's like having a friend in a this new place who take you under their wing and show you what only the insiders know. Some private tourist guides will invite you to visit their home for a meal. While doing research I found there are guides available almost everywhere including Europe, United States, Asia and certain parts of Africa. Please do your own research before hiring a private tourist guide.
