Heart attack is such a dreaded word. Everyone is scared of it. Most of us know of someone who has suffered a heart attack. Some people may survive, but most people who survive also may not be able to lead a lifestyle as they had before the heart attack.

A heart attack is permanent damage to the heart muscle caused by loss of blood flow to the heart. The heart needs this oxygen to function. When there is a block in the arteries supplying oxygen rich blood to the heart, it results in a heart attack. Left without oxygen, the portion of the heart muscle served by the blocked artery is injured.

So what are the risks of a heart attack? Who all are at high risk of getting a heart attack? The list of reasons causing heart attacks are given below.

1. Hypertension: Hypertension leads to increased risk for heart attacks. High blood pressure as hypertension is commonly known, puts added force against the artery walls. This extra pressure can damage the arteries after some time.

2. Diabetes: Diabetes is a condition that is a major risk factor in heart attacks. One reason could be the damage caused to the heart arteries by diabetes. The damage may be because diabetes causes narrowing of these arteries.

3. Obesity: Obesity plays a major role in a person getting a heart attack. One reason is that increased obesity likely leads to increased fat. The other reason is because the more obese the person is, the likely is the person to exercise. This is the main reasons of obesity leading to heart attacks.

4. Heredity: Some people are at a higher risk of heart attacks due to their ‘genes'. This is due to the fact that children of parents who had heart attacks are at an increased risk over those whose parents have not had heart related problems.

5. Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of heart attacks among a host of other conditions. The risk of heart attacks increase with the number of cigarettes or tobacco related product use. It also increases with the number of years of smoking. The risk decreases immediately after cessation of smoking.

6. Blood cholesterol levels: Blood cholesterol levels play a major role in increasing the risk of a person getting heart attack. People having a low level of High-density lipoprotein (HDL) and those having a high level of Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) are at a higher risk of getting a heart attack.

7. Sedentary lifestyle: People who are doing desk jobs with very little exercise are more highly prone for heart attacks than people who exercise regularly either as part of their work or take the time to exercise in their free time.

These are some of the main risk factors that can cause heart attacks. More the number of risk factors, more the risk of getting a heart attack. Reduction in some of the risk factors is possible. This reduction in the number of risk factors will decrease the risk of getting a heart attack.
