People who suffer from heart disease should know about Atherosclerosis and Arteriosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can be very dangerous when present. It can cause varying severity of different diseases. This article talks of the various complications caused by atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a disease that affects the artery walls. Arteries are the vessels that carry blood. The common reason for the formation of the atherosclerosis can be due to the deposition of substances called lipoproteins. This can cause the artery vessel walls to become hard. When there are many plaques similar to the ones that is described form in the wall of a artery, then it can cause severe problems in the health of the individual who is affected by this problem.

Arteriosclerosis on the other hand describes any hardening of any vessel that carries blood from the heart. So any artery that carries blood can become hard and it is called as arteriosclerosis. Though atherosclerosis is a form of arteriosclerosis, it should be understood that in atherosclerosis the plaque formation is not due to any other reason but because of the formation of the plaque due to the deposition of lipoprotein.

Atherosclerosis can lead to an important problem. The problem is that the plaques that cause the atherosclerosis can suddenly break down due to the force with which the blood is flowing. When the plaques break down, it can be washed down in the blood stream and when the artery becomes narrowed, the plaque can cause stenosis. This stenosis is the blocking of the blood vessel walls and not supplying blood to the organs to which the artery was supplying the blood. This leads to severe damage to the organ itself. It can also lead to inefficiency in the way the organ was functioning.

Atherosclerosis in the heart:
When there is an atherosclerosis in the vessels that are present in the heart, the sudden break of the atherosclerotic plaque can lead to a loss of blood supply to the heart. This can lead to death of the cardiac muscle, leading to inefficient pumping of blood by the heart. This results in the severe pain that is seen in patients who have had what is commonly called as a heart attack. In severe cases where the blood supply is completely blocked, the person can die.

Atherosclerosis and other disorders:
The atherosclerotic plaque that was dislodged from its original place may move along the blood stream and can enter the vessels that supply blood to the brain. When this happens, the blood supply to a part of the brain can be stopped. This leads to various symptoms depending on the artery that was blocked and the part of the brain that died due to the lack of blood supply. This is the most common cause of stroke, also called as cerebro vascular accident. Many people who suffer from this condition may have varying levels of disabilities that may last for life. Some of the people who have severe brain damage can even die because of this condition.

Atherosclerosis is not only common in the heart and brain, but it is also seen in people to affect other organs like the kidney and the legs leading to kidney failure or amputation of the legs due to gangrene formation.

Healthy lifestyle with proper diet and adequate exercise can help to prevent many of the incidences of atherosclerosis.
