Health maintenance has always been a problem in India. Health services in India have mainly been a problem due to poverty and lack of education amongst the poor. Another reason for poor health services has been corruption, due to which there are not sufficient health maintenance facilities and services offered to the common man. What ever funds are allotted by the government for medical facilities, most of it is not even used for this purpose. There are many government owned and operated hospitals but their doors rarely open, even when the doors are open, the doctors are not available and there is no body to check why that happens. Even the local people don't know when the doctors will be available since there is no fixed time for them to come. These doctors come and go when ever they want. The medicines and medical facilities in these government hospitals are also out dated and so people are hesitant to go there any ways. Most of the money allocated for the medicines goes into the pockets of the politicians and the government doctors.

The doctors who serve in the government hospitals open their own private clinics and spend most of their time in it. So basically they get paid by the government for serving the poor but they in turn open their own clinics. So they get paid for services which they never provide to the people. Sometimes, even the medicines are supplied to their personal clinics from the government hospitals. Many of the medicines they sell in their private clinics have the seal "Not for Sale" but still they are being fearlessly sold by these doctors. It is very surprising to see the attitude of these doctors who are in the field of social service but are making unlawful money at the cost of the lives of people. To some extent it is due to these doctors that the health services for the poor are so bad and corrupt. Can our country grow with this kind of corruption in health services?

In case of an emergency, many hospitals ask to deposit money first before the patient can be admitted. Sometimes the poor do not have money or are not able to deposit money immediately but these hospitals don't care, all they are concerned about is money even if the patient is very serious. So many times we get to hear that a person died because he was not treated on time by the doctors due to lack of money.

Many a times the poor have also been given expired medicines or the same medicines for different problems, this is because these medicines are cheaper. Every body is aware of the corruption in health services but no measures are being taken to eradicate it. The poor are the main sufferers of this corruption in health services. The poor can never flourish till they are provided with better health services. The government should set up a special team that makes sure that the federal funds are being used rightfully and that the poor are being provided adequate health services. Until something like this is done, the poor will always remain poor and rich will keep getting richer.
