Health problems caused by Fluorine in water: FlurosisBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-08-18
Fluoride is a non metal element that usually helps in the build up of teeth and bones. When there is a decrease it the amount of Fluoride in the body, then it can lead to various problems like weak bones. This is because of the lack of strength that is provided to the skeletal system and also the teeth by the fluoride. Even when there is an increase in the amount of fluoride in the body, then it can cause very severe problems. When there is a mild increase in the amount of fluoride in the body, it can cause mottled enamel on the teeth. It can also cause dental fluorosis. An abnormal increase in the amount of fluoride in the body can lead to several disabling conditions. These health problems that are caused are Osteo sclerosis and also mental and growth retardation. Kidney damage and changes are also possible with high content of fluoride in the body. Abnormally high levels of fluoride content in the human body can result in death of the individual. Reasons for high fluoride in the body: 1. Water: Surface water in the vicinity of industries is contaminated with fluoride. 2. Mechanization of agriculture: This is also another reason for the fluoride in the soil. Farmers use many pesticides and insecticides that can contain high levels of fluoride. This can seep in the ground and mix in the ground water. This when drunk by people lead to fluorosis. 3. Food: Polluted food can also contain fluoride. Plants that are grown in areas where the fluoride content in the ground water is high, also have abnormally high levels of fluorine. Factors causing increased fluorine absorption and susceptibility to fluorosis: 1. Concentration of fluorine in the food or water. 2. The solubility of the fluorine can increase the amount of fluorine in the water. 3. Children are more sensitive to the changes that are caused by fluorine. They are also the high risk population whose body absorbs more fluorine from various sources. 4. Various stress factors also affect the individual. 5. The food habits can also increase the amount of absorption of fluorine into the body. The people who have food that is grown in places where there is more fluorine in ground water can have fluorosis. Precautions: 1. Health education regarding appropriate use of fluorides is a very important method of preventing the occurrence of fluorosis. Adequate health education will help the people to understand the problems related to high fluorine intake. 2. Mothers in areas affected by high content of fluorine in the ground water should be encouraged to breast feed the child instead of feeding the child with artificial foods. This will help the child in saving it from the problems of fluorosis. The breast milk also prevents the child from suffering due to the high content of fluorine. 3. It has also been observed that the intake of Calcium, Vitamin C or Vitamin D are effective in protecting the person from being affected by fluorosis. This prevents the increased toxicity of the fluorine that might otherwise have affected the individual.
