Health Guide for Computer Users. Dealing with aches and pains.BY: Mach | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2008-11-14
What happens when we spend good many hours in front of our personal computer or laptop. Our eyes get swollen and watery time to time. We start getting health problems like backaches, headaches and other computer-related aches and pains due to computer over use. WHAT CAUSES THESE ACHES AND PAINS? People who work in front of computer monitors for a long time - are likely to develop these symptoms after some time. The most common types include a sore neck, which develops due to sitting in front of the computer monitor for a long time and eye strain. Many of these aches are often due to REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY in which certain muscles and tissues start to suffer because of excessive use of wrists, hands and fingers while working with the computer mouse and keyboard. Even the muscle around the shoulder blade becomes stiff. Backache and spondylitis start from here. Those working with a colour monitor gets computer vision syndrome which leads to severe headaches, blurred eyesight. This happens due to the fatigue of eye muscles. If we hold other muscles in our body in one position too long waste products build up in the muscles . TO AVOID THE ABOVE HEALTH PROBLEMS WE SHOULD MAINTAIN THE FOLLOWING STEPS: 1. CORRECT SITTING POSTURE: We should sit straight back against the back rest keeping some space between the back of our legs and the front edge of the seat. Also we must keep our feet firmly on the floor or footrest. This keeps our body in a neutral position. 2. EYES SHOULD BE GIVEN SOME REST TIME TO TIME: The best method is to relax our eyes by simply taking our eyes from the computer monitor and look out of the widow or stare at some other objects. It's good to install anti-glare screen on our monitor to prevent glare and reflections from the screen. It is also advised by the doctors that we should blink frequently and not just stare at the monitor for long time. Look away from the computer to some other object for some time. Contrast and brightness of the monitor should be adjusted with the room's lighting condition. Better avoid reflections of light on the monitor screen from behind. This will help to maintain the health of your eyes. 3. MAINTAIN NEUTRAL SITTING POSTURE: To use keyboard and mouse we have to maintain neutral posture. Arms should be kept comfortably at our sides. Our elbows should be bent at approximately 90 degrees. Our wrist should be given rest in between typing. We should use soft wrist support and it should be kept at the same height as the front edge of the keyboard. 4. DO NOT GET STUCK IN ONE POSITION: A break is very useful for your overall health. We should not sit in front of a computer monitor for a long time. SOME SIMPLE WORKOUT ROUTINE TO FOLLOW: 1. Repetitive rotation of fingers, palms and wrists help to avoid aches. 2. Closing our eyes tightly and then open them slowly is very effective to prevent eye strain. This should be done for five to ten minutes. 3. Simple work out with our legs should be done time to time. Above steps are very simple but they can reduce lot of pain while using computer. So next time you use computer, take care of your health too.
