Health & economics: The role of health care in the economics of a nation.BY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Others | Post Date: 2009-06-18
We are conscious about the fact that health and health care needs affect our economy. This can be for the individual, society and country. Financial limitations restrict the procurement of adequate medical care. There are people engaged in demand and supply of health. That is doctors, patients, nurses, hospitals pharmaceutical companies etc. Health economics studies these people and institutions. So health economics cannot exist independent of economics. Health economics quantify the resources used in health care delivery system. Effects of health on development and on the economy: If we take human resources as human capital, then the human capital should be invested wisely upon health & education. We will have better returns through skills and productively. The following are the positive effects of health on development 1. Good health can promote good labour morale and lead to greater productivity potential. This in turn will improve the economy. 2. Good health affects intelligence. Inadequate diet and lack of maternal care can cause mental retardation and other mental problems, which can affect productivity. 3. Better health is generally associated with better capacity and leadership. This can possibly be the reason why our leaders and politicians rarely get sick!!! Causes of health problems in developing countries: Much of the sickness is caused by preventable infectious diseases, poverty, low public health standards, lack of adequate medical care, improper living conditions etc. 1. High fertility: This causes high mortality among children and mothers and leads to low life expectancy. High fertility leads to susceptibility to diseases among children and mothers. Low birth spacing also leads to high incidents of diseases. 2. Malnutrition: This can lead to Kwashiorkor and marasmus. There is protein and calorie deficiency. This is due to lack of financial resources. Malnutrition mainly affects children, pregnant woman & lactating mothers. Malnutrition affects many other diseases. Children may have stunted growth and lack of mental development. 3. Environmental and sanitary factors: These are also important determinants of health of people. - Contamination of water supply leads to typhoid dysentery and other water- borne diseases. - Housing is another component of sanitation. Houses lack of ventilation, access to sunlight and sufficient space and are usually unclean houses. - Policies to improve sanitation, focus on human and animal waste disposal and provision of effective sewage system. Faecal contamination of water sources are the main causes of water bore diseases. This shows that the health of an individual or a society is very important. The health care system indirectly causes a major impact on the economy of a country. This is true especially in developing countries. So for a country to be economically well off, the people of the country need to be healthy.
