All the software engineers who are reading this article and have been in software industry for more than 8-10 years, will agree with me that the biggest change they have seen during their IT career is gender shift. The percentage of girls in the Indian IT industry has gone up significantly and I will not be surprised if it out-paces number of boys in most software companies.

So I thought, let's analyze why have so many girls have started to enter the software industry in India.

1. PEER EFFECT:
In most Indian families, the parents play a vital role in deciding what a girl wants to do in her career. 10 to 15 years back if a girl wanted to do Engineering, most parents would have discouraged and would have suggested her to select a more regular and widely accepted women career like teaching. Now a days it is very common in India to know at least a few girls in you neighborhood or girls of your relatives who have successfully become software engineers and are doing well. Looking at these examples young girls are even further motivated to select a career in Software Engineering themselves. The percentage of girls in an engineering college is rising, therefore parents are not scared that their daughter will be surrounded mostly by boys.

2. MONEY - EXCELLENT SALARY IN IT INDUSTRY:
There is no comparison in the amount of money you make in software when compared to the traditional jobs like teaching. Teachers still make four figure salary and experienced ones can make up to 15,000 rupees or so, while a typical entry level software job offers a salary of more than 25,000 rupees. Over time, it is common for girls (and boys) to make double or triple of that amount.

3. MOST GUYS ARE LOOKING FOR WORKING GIRLS TOO:
Times have changed fast and maintaining a good lifestyle on one salary is not easy in India. The cost of food, transportation and housing have shot up like
crazy. Guys now a days actually prefer marrying a girl who is a doctor or a software engineer. The percentage of men who think that women should only sit at home and work, cook and raise kids have gone down significantly. Guys are not just going for beautiful or good looking girls or how much dowry her parents can give, they seeing things from a more practical point of view.

4. DURATION OF EDUCATION:
Engineering is typically a four year course and most girls by the age of 22 years complete the course and are ready to join the workforce. While a typical "BSc + MSc" course or "BCom + MCom" course takes 5-6 years.

5. NUMBER OF ENGINEERING COLLEGES:
A large number of Engineering colleges have opened in India in last 7-8 years and most of them offer a course in Computer Science. This increases the
probability of getting selected to the desired engineering branch (Computer-Software in this case). In many cases girls are simply able to do engineering in their local city, if not, most colleges these days offer girls hostel anyway.

6. REDUCED INTEREST IN OTHER FIELDS:
Most jobs which require physical hard work are typically not the first choice for women - like construction, armed forces and other mechanical jobs.
Jobs like sales and marketing can have odd hours of work or a lot of random commute which boys can usually do much better. Software jobs are more clean, have better timing and some of them even offer work-from-home for a few days if needed. This is another reason why girls are attracted towards the software profession. Additional common fields which girls opt in are Interior / Fashion designing, Biotech, research, MBA, Architecture, Call centers and other engineering fields like Chemical and Telecom.

7. OTHER BENEFITS:
There are benefits which everyone in software get regardless of gender like medical insurance, good salary, bonuses, chance to travel out of the country
if required by your project and countless other small benefits.

8. COOKING AND CHILD CARE FACILITY:
Most families where both men and women are working, typically have a maid servant who takes care of house hold chores and does the cooking. In other cases they may decide to make use of the growing tiffin system. Child care facilities in bigger cities, especially for working parents has also been rising therefore kids can stay there after school and in the evening parents pick them up.

According to a survey by 'Assocham' -The enrollment of girls in technical institutes in the country has gone up from 22 percent in 2002 to 125 percent this year, with most preferring system engineering and information and communication. However, aerospace and material engineering are not preferred by women in India.
