The herbal "wonder drug" or Garlic is one of the most primitive plant humans have cultivated for ages, it is widely used for medicinal purpose and for the purpose of cooking all over the world. Garlic can be grown year-round in mild climates. The sulfur compounds inside garlic are responsible for giving it a pungent odor.

Popular beliefs regarding health benefits of Garlic:
Eating garlic in limited/small quantities has several health benefits for us. Even though garlic is associated with bad breath it is also one of the healthiest foods. Early humans believed that Garlic an cure cold , plague and even a natural mosquito repellent. There have also been claims that Garlic may help prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and even cancer. It has some anti-fungal properties which can help treat asthma and yeast infections. You can use odorless garlic supplements if you do not like it's smell.

A bit of Exaggeration too:
But, modern studies have actually concluded that many medicinal properties of Garlic are overly exaggerated, therefore you should always consult your doctor before you decide taking garlic for the purpose of health benefits only.

Nutritional value of Garlic

Health benefits of Garlic:
1. Acne treatments: Although garlic itself is not a solution for Acne by itself it can be used along with other treatments. Personally I am not aware of any scientific research which proves that garlic can treat Acne but many believe it does therefore it is best to consult your doctor. Acne may be caused because of hormones and diet. The properties of garlic include antiviral, antiseptic, anti fungal and an antioxidant agent. How to use Garlic to treat Acne - You may just cut open a garlic clove, squash it, mix with luke warm water and apply it on the affected area and leave for 5 minutes, but do consult your dermatologist.

2. Reduce Cholesterol and lower chances of heart diseases:
Garlic is also believed to reduce Cholesterol but again there are some theories which contradict this fact. Therefore whether or not Garlic lowers LDL, HDL, or triglycerides is not clearly know yet.

3. Antioxidants: Garlic is rich in antioxidants that can help fend off cancer, heart disease and the effects of aging.

4. Anti-Bacterial : It may be used to treat infections like thrush.

5. Reduced blood pressure: Garlic can help to reduce blood pressure but not very significantly.

6. Garlic is also alleged to help regulate blood sugar levels and therefore may be helpful to some people with diabetes.

7. In some cases garlic may be used to treat intestinal worms and parasites.

8. There are claims that eating Garlic can even help to soothe in some conditions in AIDS.

Garlic may be labeled as a wonder drug but consuming garlic in large quantity can have some side effects or serious effects too. [ref: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garlic]

- Garlic can thin the blood similar to the effect of aspirin.
- Too much garlic can cause irritation or even damage to your digestive tract.
- Garlic and onions might be toxic to cats and dogs
- Some people may be allergic to garlic.
- Other minor problems not mentioned here.

Low levels of garlic may be beneficial. Therefore, always consult your doctor before introducing garlic in your diet and always start with a very low intake.
