Forgiveness - The Way To HappinessBY: Ms Royce | Category: Self Improvement | Post Date: 2008-07-10
Forgiveness is the process of ceasing to feel resentment, indignation or anger against another person for a percieved offense, difference or mistake or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution. Forgiveness and letting go can lead you down the path of healing and peace. When someone you care about hurts you, you can hold on to anger, resentment and thoughts of revenge or you can choose and embrace forgiveness and move forward. Nearly everyone has been hurt by the actions or words of another. Your mother criticized your parenting skills. Your friend gossiped about you. Your partner had an affair. These wounds can leave you with lasting feelings of anger, bitterness and even vengeance. But when you don't practice forgiveness, you may be the one who most dearly pays. By embracing forgiveness, you embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy. Forgiveness works! It is often difficult, but it works. We often think of forgiveness as something that someone who has done us wrong must ask of us. There is always another way of looking at something. My thoughts on forgiveness suggest that you focus on offering forgiveness to the person who has wronged you. To not forgive them is like taking the poison (continuing to suffer for what they did or didn't do to you) and expecting them to die! Forgiveness is lik a gift you give to yourself. It's not something you do for someone else. It's not complicated. It is rather simple. Simply identify the situation and ask yourself; "Am I willing to waste my energy further on this matter?' If the answer is "NO", then that's it. All is forgiven. Forgiviness is an act of imagination. It dares you to imagine a better future, one that is based on the blessed possibility that your hurt will not be the final word on the matter. It challenges you to give up your destructive thoughts about the situation and to believe in the possiblility of a better future. It builds confidence that you can survive the pain and grow from it. Choice is always present in forgiveness. You do not have to forgive, however, there are consequences. Refusing to forgive by holding on to the anger, resentment and a sense of betrayal can make your own life miserable. A vindictive mind set creates bitterness and lets the betrayer claim one more victim. There is nothing so bad that connot be forgiven. Nothing! Forgiveness is a healing journey for both the body and soul. Yet eventhough you know in your heart that you want or need to forgive someone, the path toward peace can be difficult to say the least. In order to move forward, it often helps to have an accurate sense of where you are right now. In conclusion to this article, Alexander Pope once said, "To err is human; to forgive, Divine."
