Food Addiction: Natural ways to stop and overcome food cravings.BY: Jessica | Category: Food and Drinks | Post Date: 2009-09-03
Addiction to food is a common problem which many of us face in our daily life. A majority of people who get food craving all the time do not have any medical condition. Their craving for food is purely based out of their brain. For others who have a medical condition should obviously follow only their doctors advice. Here are some natural ways to control your food addiction or at least minimize the problem. Getting overweight / obese is the worst outcome of food addiction. Common Symptoms of Food Addiction: The taste, smell and sight of food triggers an uncontrollable craving for food. Sometimes you eat even when you're not hungry or eat endlessly when you are watching TV. You know that more food is bad for you, yet you are not able to control yourself. You eat in secret when no one else is around or you seek mental comfort by eating food. Natural ways to overcome Food Addiction 1. Get Busy: A majority of people who are addicted to food is because they have too much time to think on what to eat. Now I am not telling you to be super-super busy when people even forget to take their lunch, but occupy yourself in some activity, preferably something that requires some physical activity too. We often eat because we have nothing else to do and our body starts to consider eating as an activity or a source of entertainment. If you are stay at home mom, then why not start a part time 'work from home' business. If nothing else engage yourself in community activity or start writing online like me. Have a purpose in life. Keeping your brain busy is one of the best ways to overcome food addiction. 2. Reduce STRESS: A majority of people who are always craving for food are stressed in life. Stress gives us a feeling of weakness and our brain wrongly interprets it as lack of energy in the body and signals us that we need to eat more food to get energy. Our brain can be fooled by stress. Before you even try to get rid of your food addiction, reduce the stress in your life. It is extremely important. Sometimes it might not be possible to get rid of food cravings without reducing stress first. Seek professional help if needed. 3. Eat healthy, Eat fruits: I also use to hate fruits but I started to insist myself to have them. One year later, I developed a strong craving for fruits. My favorite fruits are oranges, apple, grapes and watermelon. Consuming fruits is any day better than having processed snacks or oily food. Even doctors recommend that we eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. The nice thing about most fruits is that they are low in calories, rich in vitamins and fiber and overall very good for our body. So when you are hungry next time, have fruits. Instead of food addict .. become a FRUIT ADDICT !! Fruits are not the only healthy foods out there, search online and you will find many healthy recipes that are almost equally healthy. 4. Alter your friend circle: One food addict is more than enough to hook other friends into food addiction too. Our body has a natural craving for processed foods, salt, sugar and fat. Someone who makes delicious greasy food can quickly change healthy food habits of others, stay away from these people or atleast limit your intake of unhealthy food. 5. You are probably shortening your life span. People who over eat, become obese and often develop health problems like high cholesterol and diabetes. Think carefully, you might be doing really bad things to your body due to this constant craving for food. A sense of responsibility towards your body inspires in making good decisions. There have been several studies which prove that eating less food (say 1500 calories instead 2000 calories or more) helps to increase the life span of humans under normal circumstances. 6. Drink enough water: Water is not only good for us, it makes us feel full. Avoid drinking soda's as they are full of sugar. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water every day. 7. Avoid excessive sugar (and salt): Our body loves sugar, salt and oil. These three things are needed for the body but in limited quantities only. 8. Eat smaller proportions: Combining fruits and salads with your meals can reduce the quantity of your core food. Your belly still feel full even though you consume less quantity of main course in your meal. 9. Avoid compulsive eating: Admit to yourself that you have a problem. Avoid compulsive eating. 10. There are many organizations help people to overcome food addiction. Meet more people who are in the same situation like you, this will give you company of others, make your effort more interesting, new ideas and a feeling of being in a team. Keep a diary of your progress. 11. Get rid of your habit gradually: One fine day you decide that you are not going to be very strict starting today, it does not work. Like any other thing you need to overcome your food addiction gradually. Give time to your body and metabolism to get use to the new diet plan. Try to get into your new diet plan in about 30 days time. 12. Exercise: One may wonder what does exercise has to do with food craving. It really does, you can get the same energy by exercising which you get by eating food, in fact its much more. Joining a gym will also help you to remain motivated. Natural ways to overcome food cravings may not be enough for everyone. If so, contact your doctor or a therapist to get a control of your food addiction.
