FOOD FADS - Healthy Eating ChoicesBY: Rohini Upreti | Category: Food and Drinks | Post Date: 2008-08-11
Food is the chief source of the essential materials which the body needs for it's well-being. These essential materials are called ‘nutrients'. Good food is indispensable for health at all stages of life and for satisfactory growth during infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood. We spend a considerable part of our time and money in selecting and purchasing food by gathering information about food and its nutritional value through newspapers, magazines, books, advertisements and through interaction with our friends and relatives. Misinformation or wrong and unscientific information about food is termed as food fads. Some wrong notion about food has arisen due to certain customs, traditions and wrong beliefs. One such notion is that starchy food such as rice and bread is rich in calories. In order to reduce weight people tend to cut down their intake of cereal like chapatti or rice from their diet. The fact is that these cereals are not a very high source of energy. Calories increase only when some high calorie food is added to them such as ghee, butter, jam, sugar, cheese etc. Another notion that exists among people is that the weight reduction is possible by replacing rice by chapatti or bread. It is however important to know that both rice and wheat have the same number of calories, so in order to achieve weight loss the total calorie intake should be reduced instead of cutting down one key food ingredient. People generally believe that expensive fruits like grapes or pomegranates have a greater nutritional value than cheaper fruits. Banana and guava which are known as common man's fruit are actually richer in nutrition than most of the expensive ones. Spinach, an inexpensive leafy vegetable, is another such example which is rich in fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins So the food fad that expensive food is considered more nutritious and good for health than inexpensive ones is baseless. Another myth which exists is that the white eggs are better than the brown ones where as both of them have the same nutritional value. Some manufacturers claim that people should use a particular brand of cooking oil as it contains high PUFA (poly-unsaturated fatty acids) and no cholesterol and therefore it is good for the heart patients. However, the fact remains that all vegetable oils with the exception of olive and coconut have a high content of PUFA and do not contain cholesterol. Therefore a layman should not be misguided into thinking that a particular brand of vegetable oil contains no cholesterol so he can safely consume as much oil as he wants without any problem. In 90's, in the US, there was a low fat craze. Studies warned the citizens to reduce the amount of fat in their diets. Suddenly the new HOT BRANDING was -LOW FAT-. You put the tag on the product and consider it sold even if the product came across as tasteless. The low-fat, low carbohydrate products were a food fad, a trend which gradually declined. Oat bran was a hot food fad, in the 80s, in US. The benefit was a lowered cholesterol and as a result oat bran got into everything like cereals, bread and other bakery products. Sometimes later, studies and surveys suggested otherwise and as a result it began disappearing from the store shelves. Food fads are like tornadoes. They come rather violently stay for a while and then pass on. It is actually the food companies that capitalize on the emerging consumer trends (FOOD FADS) to sell their products. They make the most while the sun shines. The raw food fad has always been a craze with fitness freaks. It is guaranteed to deliver a perfect health. Those who propagate raw food believe that when we cook food, enzymes are destroyed and that human beings survived on raw food until around 10,000 years ago. My friends, it's true that enzymes in the food get destroyed when submitted to high temperatures but the human body provides all the enzymes we need to digest food. Then Why worry about it at all!! Organic food is also gaining popularity at a fast pace. Tomatoes grown without pesticides have a fuller flavor than common run-of-the-mill variety. Restaurants and chefs wanting to make a name for them, incorporate the word ‘organic' in any meal de scription and the wow factor rises immediately. Fad diets is believed by it's practitioner to improve health but this belief is often irrational. The virtue of a particular food is exaggerated. Foods are eliminated from individual diet as they are viewed as harmful or people eat certain food to express a particular lifestyle. Extreme faddist diet often lacks the energy, suitable proteins, fat soluble vitamins and some minerals that are essential for growing children. Food faddism is born of ignorance about basic scientific dietary facts. Our body requires balanced quantity of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and some minerals for it's proper growth and maintenance. Deficiency of one or the other nutrient in the food leads to poor health and makes it prone to diseases. Mixed diets containing all the nutrients in the right proportion are necessary for body's proper growth, keeping in mind one's age, health and occupation. Think, My friend before you eat and make logical rather than trendy choices. Article Source: http://www.saching.com About Author / Additional Info: Hi!
