The sun is considered to be God in parts of India and Africa. The Sun is also worshipped in some other parts of the world. The importance of the Sun in each of our lives is known. Sun causes life to sustain on this Earth. No plant can survive without the sun and animals will not be able to live without the sun.

Though the sun plays an important role in sustaining life on Earth, it also has some harmful effects that are due to excessive exposure to the rays of the sun. This article talks of the harm caused by the sun on the skin of human beings.

Problems caused by exposure to sun:

1. Melanoma:
Many years of exposure to the rays of the sun can cause damage to the skin that cannot be healed. This can result in skin cancer. The most serious form of skin cancer is melanoma. This melanoma can occur in any part of the skin in a person. The appearance of the skin cancer is asymmetrically shaped. It is irregularly colored and appears as spots. They have uneven borders and are larger than pencil eraser.

2. Women and melanoma: Women often get melanoma in their lower legs if they are used to wearing skirts. This is because of the exposure of the lower legs to the rays of the sun. Women actually develop melanoma on different parts of the body than men do.

3. Moles: A dermatologist should examine suspicious moles immediately. This could be a melanoma that was caused due to the exposure to the sun. If diagnosed very early, then it can be prevented from penetrating deep into the skin. Melanoma is completely curable, but it has to be identified early.

4. Other mild cancers: Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are types of less severe cancers that are also caused due to the exposure to the sun.

Preventing skin damage due to the suns rays:

1. Wearing a hat or carrying an umbrella can prevent the direct rays of the sun from falling on the skin of the person. Wearing protective gloves can also stop the suns rays from reaching the skin.

2. Sunscreen: Sunscreen that offers protection both against the UVA and UVB has to be used. Sunscreen should be applied as part of the daily routine. This will prevent the skin from getting damaged.

3. Other skin products: Moisturizers that contain sunscreen can be used to prevent the skin from looking aged. Most people who get diseases due to exposure to the sun get it because of casual exposure to the sun. This is the reason for making the protection from the sun an everyday concern.

4. Examination: Daily examination of the skin for any abnormal new growths or suspicious sores is necessary to prevent skin problems that can become serious.

5. Dermatologist: Annual visit to the dermatologist is necessary to have a thorough complete body examination.

The protection against the rays of the sun should be a concern that should be followed to avoid diseases like cancer.
