Euthanasia: What is it?BY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-07-23
Whenever there is a discussion of withholding treatment or withdrawing treatment from a dying person, the topic of euthanasia follows. It is derived from a Greek work meaning 'good death'. The meaning may be right in saying that the death is good and euthanasia ensures that the agony of a dying person is not prolonged. What matters is the ability of the sick person to make a decision about death. All of us make decisions everyday. When we make a decision in a calm and serene environment, it is usually a right decision, because we had time to think and make the decision. When the same person is in an angry mood and takes a decision, it can easily be wrong. This is the same reason people argue, that it is not right to allow a sick and dying person to make the decision about death. Different types of euthanasia: Passive euthanasia: This refers to the situation in which a lifesaving measure is withheld from a person who is already dying. In these dying people, even if lifesaving measures were used, it would not allow them to lead a healthy or normal life. This type of passive euthanasia is becoming more common with a competent individual requesting that no extra ordinary measures should be taken to save the sick person. Active euthanasia: This is the method in which a direct performance of an act to hasten the death of a person who is already dying or would otherwise live in a deplorable condition. Active euthanasia is more controversial than passive euthanasia. This is because it is easier to accept doing nothing to maintain the life of a person who is already dying, than it is to actively take steps to end the life. Some people think it is same as murder. Some cases of active euthanasia have created strong public sentiment leading to various legal implications. Voluntary euthanasia: Voluntary euthanasia refers to situations in which the individual affected by the terminal disease requests either active or passive euthanasia. In this case, the person who is sick makes the decision to die, so it might seem relatively more acceptable. In spite of this, here the question of suicide arises. There are some cases where the dying person got court orders to allow them to die in peace, instead of prolonging their life by artificial means. Involuntary euthanasia: Involuntary euthanasia is when the sick person is an infant or the patient is in a coma. These patients are not able to make competent decisions. The pros and cons of euthanasia continue to rock the world from time to time when people request for euthanasia. The main reason for people opting for euthanasia is the decrease in quality of life. Other than this, moral, legal and ethical considerations are present in accepting and allowing euthanasia.
