Essence Of Life - Interesting things about Hindu mythologyBY: Jashodhara | Category: India | Post Date: 2009-10-24
Durga puja is celebrated in the month of Ashwin/Kartik. An image of goddess is set up after Amavasya (New moon). Ten virtues in us are symbolized by the Ten hands of Durga Idol. According to Hindu mythology, a handful of mud from the courtyard of prostitute is used in making the idol. Prostitutes attract bad persons to save the societies goodness. These evil powers of Devils are in sex which is one of the weaker qualities of men. Thus the social structure is retained. It means women are the integral part to make and break the society and they are given importance everywhere. These evil powers are within every person as Kaam, Krodh, Madh, Lobh, Moho and Matsar. Devil (Ashur) in the statue symbolizes the inner bad qualities of the person and Durga symbolizes the good qualities in a person. When this Devil tries to hide behind every bad idea by reasoning as good, it becomes difficult for a person to free oneself. So also Durga is created from Goodness, when one looks for Godly virtues and learns from them. Killing these devil qualities by the help of Durga is celebrated as Durga Puja. The Idol of Durga helps us to concentrate and bring out the good Bhavana (emotion) in our daily routine through Bhakti Yog. It is celebrated by every Hindu in different ways. In Gujarat, nine days festival is called Navaratri. Why is it called so and worshipped during the Night only? The reason is that the darkness of night symbolizes ignorance. This creates fear and helplessness, so one can be easily trapped into the Evil powers of Lust, Anger, Addiction, Greed, Attachment and Jealousy. Every person is always bound by these bad qualities so we ask Goddess to help us in eradication of vices to transform us into good humans. In Bengal, Durga Puja is celebrated for four days. Women are given importance & respect as they are the creator of good & bad in the society. This sarvajanin system now brings all together in harmony forgetting past differences. As we are the children of GOD, Mother Durga can absolve us of every fear of the unknown and show the right path to serve the Mankind. Our MOTHER is in the Form of Nature, Country, Earth and Home.
