Ergonomic methods of using the computer: Prevent discomfortBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Technology and Computers | Post Date: 2009-08-11
Computers are used by almost everyone these days. From a young child who uses the computer to play games to very old people, all age groups use computers. People of different professions use it as part of their every day activities. Though they have many advantages, computer use for a long time continuously can lead to certain ill effects to the health of the user. To prevent the aches and pains that can be caused due to prolonged use of computers, the user has to follow ergonomic principles. Ergonomic method of using the computer will help to prevent any discomfort that may be associated with using the computer for a long time each day. The correct method of posture and handling are seen in this article. 1. Chair: The chair that is used by the computer user has to be of the correct height. It should be adjustable which will help another user to adjust the height of the chair. The chair should also be movable that will help the user to avoid sitting in the same position. Using the computer with the correct height of the chair can prevent pain in the back and also in the neck. If the chair is not of the correct height, the user has to strain the neck muscles to look at the monitor. The chair should also have adequate back support for the user. Ergonomically designed chairs are available in the market these days. These can prevent discomfort to the user. 2. Distances: All the accessories of the computer like the keyboard, mouse, speakers (if not in built), should be at an optimal distance from the user. Reaching out too much for any of these accessories can cause backache or it can cause a ‘catch' that can be very disabling. Correct distance from the user will help to prevent these discomforts. Ergonomically designed computer tables are available that can be used to place al the accessories at the right reach from the user. 3. Keyboard: Many computer users can have problems of the wrist. The problems can vary from a mild discomfort that is caused by pressure on the wrist while typing. This can also be as severe as nerve damage as a result of compression of the nerve at the wrist that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. This can cause pain and loss of function of the affected hand. This can be prevented by using padded wrist rest supports both for using the keyboard and also while using the keyboard 4. Posture: The posture also can cause major problems like muscle aches that can cause back pain and neck pain. These can be avoided if the individual using the computer sits in the correct posture. The person should not stoop or bend too much. The monitor should be about half a meter length from the eyes. This will prevent the person from bending the neck. Correct posture can prevent discomfort. Ergonomic method of working on the computer will help the person to prevent discomfort. It will also prevent various bone and muscle related problems if the person ensures good posture.
