Energy requirements of the body for various activitiesBY: Deena David | Category: Others | Post Date: 2009-07-28
The body needs a lot of energy to do work. Energy for the body is supplied by the food we eat. The food that is taken in is digested and it is converted into sugars. These sugars are the immediate sources of energy. The excess energy is converted into fat and stored in the adipose tissue of the body. The energy requirements of the body can be met whenever necessary by going to these reserves. Energy is defined as the capacity to perform work. It is manifested in the environment as heat, light and mechanical energy. The property of energy is that it can neither be created nor be destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another. Energy requirements of the body can be varied. It is required for the following purposes: 1. Growth and maintenance of body tissues: The body needs a huge amount of energy for the growth and development. The tissues actually grow from a single cell and specialize into various organs. These body parts are in a constant process of growth, repair and change. These processes require a lot of energy. 2. Maintenance of body temperature: The body temperature is maintained by the energy stores in the body. To cool down the body, the energy is conserved. The body heat is increased in cool climates by converting the stored energy into heat energy. 3. Muscle activity: All the muscle activities in the body need energy for their work. This energy is got from the food we eat. All activities of leisure like walking, playing that need voluntary muscle activity also require energy. The person is able to feel the energy expenditure with the heat and sweat expended during these activities. 4. Involuntary muscle activity: Involuntary activities like heart beats, movements of the gastro intestinal tract and the movements of the muscles of respiration also require a large amount of energy. This is not under the control of the person, but happens automatically. The individual does not even feel the energy expenditure because it occurs without the knowledge of the person. 5. Metabolism: The general metabolism of the body also requires energy. This is either taken up directly as the food is digested or it can also be taken from the energy stores of the body. These are the different ways in which energy is expended from the body. All these processes require a large amount of energy.
