Elevated Liver enzymes and their causesBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-11-05
Liver is a part of the body that does all the major functions of the body. It is an organ that helps to metabolize he food and also maintain various functions of the body. There are enzymes present in the liver that help the liver to maintain its normal functional level. In certain conditions, the enzymes that are present in the liver may leak out because of diseased condition of the liver or injury to the liver. This leak of the enzyme into the blood stream can be identified by certain blood tests and will signify damage to the liver tissue. The two most common enzymes that are present in the liver and that help in many of the metabolic and other functions are the Alanine amino transferase (ALT) and Aspartate amino transferase (AST). These enzymes were formerly known as SGOT and SGPT. These enzymes are the ones that can be identified in the blood when the liver is damaged and these leaks into the blood stream. There can be various conditions in which the liver will be damaged and the liver enzymes leak out. The most common reason for this to happen is when the liver is damaged due to various factors like infection because of a virus. 1. Viral infections: The most common infections are the Hepatitis infections. In all three Hepatitis infections, there is a certain amount of liver enzyme leak into the system. This includes Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infections. There are other viral infections like the Epstein Barr viral infection and also cytomegalo virus infections where there is a leak of the liver enzymes. When the viral infections subside, the liver enzyme levels usually come back to the normal levels. 2. Drug toxicity: The drugs that a person takes can be a cause of the elevated liver enzymes in the blood. The drugs that a person takes could be from the pain killers and also the statins that are used to reduce the cholesterol levels in the blood. Both these drugs can cause liver damage if taken for a long time. Prevention of liver damage is by reducing the drug intake or avoiding drugs and seeking natural remedy for the problems. 3. Other diseases: There are many other diseases that can cause an elevated liver enzyme level in the blood. These diseases include certain nervous system disorders too. The common conditions in which there is an elevated liver enzyme seen are Wilson's disease and also polymyositis. These conditions have symptoms where the liver enzyme is elevated. Adequate treatment for these diseases will automatically help to bring the liver enzyme levels to the normal levels in the blood. 4. Obesity: In certain people, even obesity can be a cause for the leakage of the liver enzyme into the blood. This leaking of the liver enzyme into the blood because of obesity is something that can be controlled by reducing the obesity. These are the common causes where the liver enzymes Alanine amino transferase (ALT) and Aspartate amino transferase (AST) are elevated in the blood. The underlying condition if treated will be more than enough to bring the levels under control. Any infection should be treated. There are other conditions than the ones mentioned here that can cause the high enzymes like liver cirrhosis.
