Economics of happiness - Is being rich the only way to be happy?BY: chitracs | Category: Others | Post Date: 2008-10-11
What is economics of happiness? We believe that having more wealth brings more happiness. But, is it true in real life? Is there any way to measure happiness? There is a vast growth in the field of economics and economists are trying to find a way to measure happiness. In the developed and developing countries, the standard of living of an individual is increasing day by day. All the countries are taking care about happiness of economics nowadays. The government is striving hard to find solution to the problems like, inflation, inequality of wealth and unemployment. The psychologists are joining hands with economists to increase the happiness index. The income generated by an individual helps to measure his happiness and the happiness of his family. When the income of every individual increases, we can say that there is a definite growth in the country. Happiness comes not only from material goods ; non-material goods also contribute to happiness. Some jobs may give less pay but more satisfaction. The people involved in social welfare activities find more happiness in helping others and they may not even earn any money from it. Sometimes they may even spend their own money and time for the welfare of others. The happiness comes from wealth, good family structure, health, job, environment and hobbies. The individual can enjoy happiness only when he is relieved from the worries of money and there is guarantee of wealth for his future. To ensure genuine happiness, genuine wealth is required. By having five houses and four cars for an individual, happiness will not get multiplied to that extent. When survey was taken to measure happiness, questions about sex, age, marital status, job, income and rating of happiness were asked to many people from different parts of the country. There is a similarity noticed, in the pattern of answering. The people who are well-educated, in goods jobs, having high income assured that they are happy. The people having ill-health, uneducated, unemployed and divorced, stated that they are not happy. So, wealth contributes about 25% to happiness and other aspects the rest. The level of education and job raises the self-confidence of anybody and make people more secure and happy. The happiness economics states that happiness will not increase as and when wealth increases. If the basic needs are fulfilled, man begins to concentrate on other things in life, than to earn money. We can make ourselves happy, by setting our mind in a better way. First, we have to work hard to get good education, job and earn money. Then , we have to choose a suitable life partner to settle in life. We have to maintain good relationship with friends and relatives. We should not feel great and we should cultivate the habits of tolerance, forgiveness and helping others. The happiness economics does not care about sudden changes. A sudden change in life like accident and death of dear one, may take away the happiness. At that time, the wealth will not help in anyway. We should learn to come out from the grief and console others, who are also affected. When a danger comes to our job or if there is heavy loss in business, then also the happiness will go. We should always be ready to tackle such unforeseen situations and restore happiness in life. The economics of happiness defines happiness in a quantifiable form. Happiness may be measured by the wealth a person possess and others aspects which help him to lead a peaceful life.
