A high fiber diet is advised by almost all diets, irrespective of their other recommendations. This shows the importance of fiber in one's diet. Fiber has a lot of benefits for the person. The meal or diet becomes balanced only if there is adequate diet in the food. So it is an integral part of a persons diet and makes a person healthy.

Fiber is mainly present in plant-based foods. It is present in large quantities in fruits and vegetables. Pulses like Bengal gram, red gram and black gram are very high in fiber content. Eating these kind of food will lead to a healthy living.

The fiber may be soluble or insoluble. Insoluble fiber is found in foods like green leafy vegetables like drumstick leaves and also foods like pulses and nuts. The fiber present in these foods is insoluble in water. Soluble fiber may be found in foods like oatmeal and oat bran. It is also found in certain fruits like apples and also other vegetable. The fiber in these foods is soluble in water.

There are many benefits of eating a meal rich in fiber. Some of these are given below:

1. Gastro intestinal system: Certain soluble fibers help in the growth of certain bacteria that promote the health of colon. Insoluble fiber helps as a laxative. So it is actually beneficial for people who suffer from constipation. It also helps to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

2. Heart Problems: High fiber intake also helps in the prevention of hypertension. The fibers help in the absorption of cholesterol. They also help in the increased elimination of cholesterol.

3. Diabetes: A diet with high fiber content will also be able to protect the person from diabetes and reduce the risk of getting diabetes. High fiber helps the person to feel full while eating and thus can help in promoting weight reduction. This is one of the main reason that fiber is included as part of the diet in many diet protocols.

4. Weight reduction: The other roles of fiber in weight management are that fiber increases the bulk in the content of the food. This helps in a feeling of satiety; it also causes delayed gastric emptying. It also has fewer calories. These things help in weight reduction.

It also helps the immune system and also increases bone strength. So it can be seen that the benefits of fiber are many. Certain supplements for high fiber diet are available in the market that has similar effect to the fiber intake in a regular diet.
