Mysore is the second largest city of Karnataka state, India. It is also known as -City of Palaces-. The Dussehra festival is celebrated very grandly in Mysore. Dussehra is also known as -Nadahabba-. To denote the victory of good over evil, the Dussehra festival is celebrated throughout India. To get the religious charm, people from all parts of India visit Mysore during Dussehra time. Dussehra is the royal festival of Karnataka state and all the people of Karnataka participate with full enthusiasm. The Navarathri festival is celebrated for 9 days and the Goddesses Parvathi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi are worshipped during these days. The celebration of Dussehra festival began during the period of King Raja Wodeyar I. It is believed that Mahishasura vadam was done by Devi Chamundeshwari on vijayadasami day. To mark the victory, dussehra festival is being celebrated. The royal family takes much interest in the celebrations. On the first day, the King worships his family diety, navagrahas and the kalasa and sits on the throne. The palace is illuminated with lights and a 21-gun salute is done to the royal emblem. Nowadays, the political leaders also take part in Dussehra festival. The royal sword is presented to the king and on Mahanavami day, it is taken on procession on elephant followed by other elephants, camels and horses. The whole Mysore city is illuminated with lights for all the 10 days. There are no words to describe the beauty of Mysore palace with light decorations, on all parts of the palace. The charm of Dussehra procession is enhanced with torch light parade, musical events and dances. The Dussehra festival is attended by members of royal family, government officals and special invitees from various places. The festival mood is created when we see decorated arches, cultural shows, musical events, the bharathanatyam dance, yakshagana and theppotsava. A grand exhibition is also held at Doddakere Maidana. The musical procession takes place from Mysore palace when the idol of Devi Chamundeshwari is placed on the golden throne on top of a decorated elephant. The procession of horses, dancers and visitors ends at the Bannimantap where the banni tree is worshipped. It is believed that Pandavas hide their arms for a period of one year of Agnatavasa. The kings used to worship the banni tree before going for war. Marking the end of Mysore Dussehra festival: On the night of Vijayadasami, the sports meet, cultural programmes for children and women are held throughout the city to mark the end of dussehra festival. The performances by gymnastic experts and horseback riders are also encouraged. A torch light tattoo and fireworks is a feast to the eye of visitors and tourists.
