Durga puja celebration in West Bengal - Durga pooja festival.

INTRODUCTION:
The people belonging to all religions join together and celebrate Durga Puja in a grand manner, in West Bengal state of India, every year. Everybody will be in festival mood and all schools, colleges and offices will remain closed so that all can take part in celebration. The Durga puja is celebrated to show goodness winning over evil symbolically. It is one of the most important festivals of India and it is celebrated grandly in West Bengal state. The Bengalis express their culture and devotion through this festival. The tourists from all over the world visit West Bengal to see Durga puja celebrations. The Bengalis those living away from their hometown, definitely visit their place at the time of Durga puja. The festival is also celebrated with intense fervour and zest, in West Bengal state.


WHY IS DURGA PUJA CELEBRATED:
As per purana, all the gods combined their power and gave it to Goddess Durga and she defeated and killed Mahishasura. According to mythological view, Dussehra marks the victory of Ram over Ravana. On this day in Satya Yug, Rama, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, killed the great demon and king of Lanka, Ravana and Lord Rama conjured Durga to seek her blessings for the victory in the war against Ravana.

Another legend says that Durga, with the permission of her husband Lord Shiva visits her mother for nine days in a year and it is celebrated as Durga Puja. When the idol of Goddess Durga is immersed in river Ganga, it symbolizes her return to her husband's place.


HOW IS DURGA PUJA CELEBRATED:
The Bengalis start preparing for the festival from Mahalaya amavasya day . They decorate homes, buy gifts for fiends and relatives and new clothes for themselves and relatives for the festival. The shopping plaza and markets are totally packed up from one month before the festival. The youngsters take this opportunity to buy whatever they want.

The puja is celebrated for 5 days commencing from 6th day of navarathri and ending on 10th day. The preparation starts before a month. The whole atmosphere is filled with energy and enthusiasm. The idols of Goddess Durga, Lord Ganesha, Lord Karthik, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswathi are prepared. On Mahasashti day, that is 6th day of navarathri, the life of the Devi is brought from a nearby pond or river in a banana tree and established inside the image. This marks the commencement of Durga puja. The pandals erected throughout the state attract all people. The decorations are made and every year new designs are introduced. The drum known as -Dhak- starts it beat with its majestic rhythm from mahasashti day. The Ramlila is an enactment of the life of Lord Rama and is held during the nine days preceding Dussehra. On the day of Vijay Dasami, larger than life effigies of Ravana, his son and brother - Meghnadh and Kumbhakarna are set to fire. On the day of Vijaya dasami day people say -Jai Bijoy- and exchange wishes.

During Puja, the Bengalis wear new clothes, shoes and jewels. Everywhere cultural programmes are organized throughout the day. Special dishes are prepared and distributed to all. Durga Puja in West Bengal is all about fun, frolic and food. The festival can never be considered complete without good food. On Mahadasami day, that is 10th day of Navarathri, the idol is taken out of pandal in a grand procession, during evening. Everybody walks towards the bank of river Ganga for immersing the idol. Thousands of people will be seen at that time. Happy Puja.
