Sleep is a very important part of the life of a person. There are various things that have to be present for a person to have a healthy lifestyle. The person should have good, nutritious and balanced food. Other than this adequate rest is very important for the person to have a healthy life. There are many times when the person is greatly stressed because of various factors. At these times adequate relaxation is very essential for the person to avoid getting any diseases and also to be healthy.

There is a duration for which a person has to sleep to be healthy. There are many people who do not care about this and have varying sleep habits. The varying sleep habits of people can cause them to have severe problems in their life. The duration for which a person has to sleep to be healthy may vary from person to person depending on various factors.

Age:

The person who is older needs lesser time to sleep than a child. A child who is a newborn will sleep most of the day. The baby may sleep for as long as 20 hours a day. As the child grows older, the child may sleep for a lesser period of time. A child who is around one year old may sleep for a time of about 12 to 16 hours. As the child gets older, the number of hours spent in sleeping decreases. The child sleeps for only about ten to twelve hours by the time it is three years old.

Medications:

The medications that the person is taking can also cause an effect in the time that is spent in sleeping. This is because a person who spends a lot of time sleeping can have various effects on the body that can be dangerous like pressure sores. So the medications that cause sleep should be avoided unless it is absolutely necessary for the person.

Stress:

There are people many people who are stressed out in their work and this can cause decreased sleep because the mind of the person does not really rest even during sleep and the person wakes up automatically without sleeping for a long time. This in turn increases the stress level and can be dangerous for the person.

Substance abuse:

There are many people who are involved in a lot of substance abuse and this can cause the person to have increased amount of sleep because the substance abuse can make the person be sedated and the person may sleep for a longer time than normal. This is a temporary condition and the person usually has normal sleeping habits after stopping the abuse, unless the person is so addicted that he has signs of withdrawal.

Stimulants:

There are various stimulants tat are consumed as part of the diet and this can cause the person to have increased period where sleep is not present. Coffee and tea are also considered stimulants, though their effect is very minimal.

These are the various factors that can cause sleep alterations.
