The act of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol is called drunk driving. The driver should be aware of the risk involved. The consumption of alcohol imposes negative impacts. The dullness due to intake of alcohol, affects proper functioning of sensitive organs, which slows his actions of perception, speed and performance. Risks of drunk driving: The road accidents occur frequently due to drunk driving. In many cases, it causes death of driver, passengers, travellers in other vehicles and pedestrians. Sometimes it may result in serious injuries which spoils the life and the life itself will be a burden to them. For youngsters, it has become a fashion to consume alcoholic drinks. At that time, they should avoid driving. But, many people knowingly or unknowingly, cause threat of danger to themselves and others. The road accidents occur in the country due to drunk driving may be about 40 percent of total road accidents. Some people challenge that they will be steady even after taking alcoholic drinks. But, actually this belief will not be true always. Without, their knowledge, they may become weak while driving. Even if the price and tax on alcohol is in hike, the habitual drunkers cannot give up this habit. It is very sad that women also now consume alcoholic drinks and drive which may result in heavy damage to them as well as to their families. Things to be done to curb drunk driving: Severe punishment should be given to those involved in driving after consuming alcoholic drinks, whether they meet with accident or not. The driving licence of the driver should be cancelled. The employers may remove the person from job, if the employee if found to be involved in drunk driving. The vehicles should be provided with interlocking facility, which disallows intoxicated persons, to start the vehicle. The wide publicity should be given through media, pointing out the consequences of drunk driving. The people may be educated to control drunk driving, through advertisements in newspaper, radio, TV and internet. The family members of the drunkers may be warned about the consequences of drunk driving. The people those do night driving may be advised to take some healthy food and drink, to keep awake, instead of taking alcoholic drinks. The safety measures on roads may be increased, to save human lives. The drivers of other vehicles should be careful, when they feel that a motor driver on road is drunk and driving the vehicle. Defensive driving is always best. A drink is always a drink and drinking mildly will not reduce any risk. Some advertisements say that alcohol content could not be detected. We should not believe it. The comfortable seating arrangement, light music and good company will make the driver to forget about alcoholic drinks while driving. The minimum age should be fixed for taking alcoholic drinks so that youngsters will be saved from this bad habit and related dangers. It is better to engage a driver who has not taken an alcoholic drink, if the car owner has taken alcoholic drink already. Please avoid drunk driving to save your life and the lives of others.
