Driving safely during monsoonBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Travel | Post Date: 2009-07-03
Every year during the rainy season, there are more accidents than what occurs during the regular months. The reasons are many. Some of the common reasons that could cause accidents are poor visibility, vehicle going out of control and the driver not concentrating enough due to the rain. Driving safely during monsoon is very important to prevent such accidents. Here are a few things that you can do to avoid accidents, specially during monsoon 1. Tyres: Make sure that the treads on the tyres are all good. Tyres that do not have proper treads will skid during the rainy season. Checking the tyres is important during all seasons. This is more important during the rainy season. 2. Wipers: The most important thing that is necessary while driving a car are the wipers. If they do not work, there is only one thing that should be done and that is parking the car on the side of the road. Wipers should work properly and wipe the glass clean. 3. Exhaust: There are instances where people have died because they were inside the car and the fumes had no way of escaping as they were caught in a flood of water. Though these instances may be rare, it is better to leave a minute opening in the window so that fresh air can enter the car, especially during floods. 4. Brakes: During rainy season, the number of brakes that fail increases. The best method of preventing this is to have your brake fluid checked regularly. Also after crossing a watery stretch of road, drive slowly and check your brakes before proceeding. 5. Lights: Make sure that you have fog lights in your vehicle. This will help when it is very hazy. The lights should be in order, as the visibility decreases during the time when it rains. Try to use the lights even during the daytime if it is raining, as it will help the drivers driving in front of you. Though these are the common causes of accidents, there can be other emergencies when you drive in the rain. To prevent all these emergencies and to address them carefully, the safest thing to do is to drive as slow as possible. Be extra alert than you usually are. Also try to maintain adequate distance from the vehicle moving in front of you. Driving safely during monsoon is very important because of several added distractions and tougher road conditions. Being careful and trying to implement the things said above will help prevent any major problems that are commonly faced by drivers during the rainy season.
