A domain name when accompanied by a hosting account makes a website. A domain name is something very familiar to us. We use it daily but fail to recognize its importance. A domain name eg www.saching.com becomes a website when there is a hosting account registered for it. A domain name is connected to its hosting account via Name servers for eg; ns1.domain.com, ns2. domain.com. A domain name can be divided into three parts. For example, in www.saching.com , .com is called top level domain name (TLD) , saching is a second level domain name and saching.com is called the host. TLDs are governed by their respective registries. .com,.net, .org etc are called generic domain names. ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is the governing authority of all registries. www.icann.org is its official website. You can get informations about all major registries and registrars from this website. A registrant is a person who has a domain name registered in his name. Registrar registers a domain for the registrant with the registry. Now how can a registrant earn money with his domain name. If a person registers the domain www.abc.com for himself and abc.com is a popular domain name, people will be enthusiastic to buy this domain for exorbitant amounts as this domain may fetch them more visitors. Popular domain names are known to fetch more money. Availability of domain names can be verified at any registrar's website for eg: www.hostway.com. In case you are interested in an already registered domain name, you may contact the registrant for a negotiation. You may find information about the registrant in the whois database. A whois, is a database maintained by ICANN that contains all information about the domain name, its registrant and registrar including the admin contact and billing contact. ICANN strictly regulates that whois information be maintained up-to-date. A domain name if chosen wisely can act as a money maker as this can attract google ranking as well as random visitors. Popular domain names are known to be parked till they are sold. Parking is a way of creating web presence while the website is being constructed. Parking may be done using sedoparking pages or simple UNDER CONSTRUCTION pages. google.com, yahoo.com, etc are the most popular domains these days.
