Diabetes - Facts everyone should know.BY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-06-01
Diabetes is a disease that is increasing to epidemic proportions around the world. Along with hypertension, it is one of the major ‘silent killers'. It may not cause any drastic changes in most people and is usually diagnosed during a routine check up or when visiting the hospital for some other condition. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles. There are two types of diabetes. The most common one is the one that affects older people. This is also called as non insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM). The diabetes that affects the younger people is usually IDDM or insulin dependent diabetes. The other type of diabetes is gestational diabetes which affects only pregnant women and usually disappears after the child is born. People suffering from any of these diabetes should take the prescribed medicines. Medicines help in the immediate control of the diabetes. But for the long term, diabetes control is achieved by a regular mix of exercise and diet control. Diet Control: It is better to meet a dietician to calculate the actual number of calories a person can intake in a day. This varies from person to person depending on the level of diabetes. It also depends on the persons lifestyle. All sweets with sugar or glucose are best avoided. Other than this, certain fruits and even high calorie foods like fats need to be avoided. The best diet would be vegetables rich in fibre. Exercises: Regular exercises are a must for any diabetic patient. The exercises should be aerobic(low intensity and long duration). Cycling, Jogging, walking are some of the common and easily done aerobic exercises. These should ideally be done for a minimum of 40 minutes at least three times a week. Here are a list of signs and symptoms common in diabetes: - Frequent urination - Unquenchable Thirst - Losing Weight Without Trying - Weakness and Fatigue - Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet Other Signs and Symptoms That Can Occur: Blurred vision, skin that is dry or itchy, frequent infections or cuts and bruises that take a long time to heal are also signs that something is amiss. Again, when these signs are associated with diabetes, they are the result of high glucose levels in the body. If you notice any of the above signs, schedule an appointment with your doctor. He or she will be able to tell you if you have reason to be concerned about a diagnosis of diabetes.
