Dementia is a progressive reduction in the cognitive function of the brain. This may be due to damage or disease of the brain and the loss of cognitive function is more than that expected for the people of that age. The number of people who have dementia is increasing because of the increase in the life expectancy of people. Dementia can have various symptoms and also different treatment approaches. People can also take preventive steps from getting dementia.

Though dementia is common in older age group people, it can also occur in younger people. The various cognitive factors that can be affected by the dementia can be memory, attention, language and problem solving. In severe conditions, people affected by dementia may not be oriented to the time, day and date. They also may not be able to identify a place or person.

Symptoms:

Symptoms can be classified as reversible or irreversible depending on the cause of the disease. At least ten percent of those suffering from dementia can be treated and the changes can be reversed. Dementia is a term that is used for a wide range of symptoms that occur due to different diseases. The common symptom though is the forgetfulness and loss of cognition.

Treatment:

There is no cure for this disease, other than for the ten percent of those who are treatable. Scientists are making progress in making medicines that will slow the process of dementia.

Cholinesterase inhibitors are used now early after the onset of the disease. Other than this interventions that are aimed at modifying the cognition and behaviour are important. As much as the patient us treated, education to the caregiver is also necessary. This will help to increase the quality of care got by the patient.

Soothing and stimulating environments can be provided for the patients. A proper environment of light, color, music and scent can help in the therapy of patients suffering from dementia.

Prevention:

The important thing is to prevent people from getting dementia. This assumes more importance because of the very few treatment options available. The best and important method of preventing dementia is by leading an active life. The person should be alert and be active mentally and physically. Mental activity can be increased by problem solving exercises. Physical exercises will also help to prevent the start of dementia.

Dementia can be very disabling for the individual and also for the whole family. It should be made sure that the goal of the person should be to prevent dementia than treating it after it has set in.
