Dead sea is located on the border of Israel and Jordan and it is called DEAD because it's water is extremely saline (salty) and that makes almost impossible for any fish, animal or vegetable life to survive. Only salt eating bacteria and some specific plants which have adapted to live in salt water (halophytes) can be found. The northern half of the Dead Sea belongs to Jordan and portions of southern half belong to Israel. It is situated in a desert.

About 3 million years ago, a major earthquake created the Syrian-African Rift. The Dead Sea sank deep into the valley and was deprived of its natural outflow to the sea over time.
