We all know about fishing. But, what is meant by phishing? It is an act of misuse through internet by a bogus person and it is a high tech scam. First an email will be sent to some user and the user will be thinking that mail was received from a legitimate person. They ask us to give some personal details like password, credit card details and bank account numbers and finally that will end in identity theft. Not only through internet, through cell phone or other mobile devices, the same type of theft is done. Sometimes a phishing email will be sent to users to update the information already given by clicking some links; otherwise their account will be suspended. On seeing the mail, people will give their personal information to the bogus person, which he will use to steal money from our bank account or he will use our credit card to buy things. Some people use the website/ domain name very similar to the one we frequently use and only one character will be different in the name of website which we may not notice unless we see very keenly. After stealing money, they will close the website. Also, in the name of fake website they may ask for donations. In the instant messages, phishing is done very cleverly. The phishing mail will contain logos like official-looking logos to convince the person that the mail is received from a legitimate person. Also, they may provide our personal information very correctly, which is already stolen from somewhere or other social network website. How to safeguard us from being a victim of phishing? We should not disclose our personal information to any unknown persons. Think well and give information to the required extent only in legitimate websites. If we receive any threatening mails asking us to click links or give personal information, we need not give importance and we can just ignore such mails. The browser status bar should have icon for lock while giving bank account number or credit card number in any website. If we feel that the mail is received from a legitimate person but still we have some doubts, we can contact them over phone, before giving personal information. Suppose, by mistake if we give some personal data, we can contact the concerned bank or credit card company and inform the thing to them. The phisher filter may be used which tracks and scans the websites visited by us. It warns and protects us, if the website seems to be a suspicious one. The banks and credit card companies may also use some authentication methods to protect the customers from phishers. They can send alert mails to the customers to keep away from phishers. The corporate companies contact employees through email for day to day work. It is a headache for them, if an attack is made to access personal data of employees and confidential information of the company. The business people have to be more careful. The real time content inspection checks every piece of information in the incoming and outgoing web content. The URL filtering engines block some websites which are branded as phishing sites. So, we should learn to use internet very carefully in the right manner and keep away from the cyber crime known as -PHISHING-.
