In many developed and developing nations, the people are looking for more comfortable lifestyles. Purchasing a car or vehicle remains one of the highest priorities. Next to this is the purchase of an air conditioner. This is especially true in countries in the Tropical regions where the temperature can climb very high and it becomes unbearably hot. These are the areas where air conditioning is used a lot. What most people do not know are the dangers associated with air conditioning.

One of the widely publicized danger is that of Legionnaire's disease that was first recognized in the 1970;s. In some buildings, the warm air expelled was not completely released into the atmosphere, leading to the growth of bacteria in this medium. This led to a few deaths due to this disease till the air conditioning system was redesigned to prevent the growth of such bacteria.

Due to air conditioning, the risks of passive smoking increases manifold. In case there is no air conditioning, the natural ventilation makes the air to move out of the windows or through the ventilation. This is not so in air conditioned rooms. The air keeps circulating for a long time with the cigarette smoke inside, increasing the risk of passive smoking.

Air conditioning systems release a large amount of positive ions into the room. This leads to the air getting saturated with these ions that can lead to feeling of fatigue, headache and also a feeling of irritation.

The air conditioning systems also pollutes the atmosphere leading to various health problems, for the individual and also the community at large. The artificial climatic environment created by using air conditioners an also cause wide variations in the indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity. This wide variation and sudden changes in the temperature and humidity can lead to immune changes in the bodies of individuals. This immune change can lead to frequent illnesses.

These are some of the many causes of illnesses that are caused by air conditioners. In spite of these dangers, the air conditioner has come to stay. This is due to the sudden climate change and also the high temperatures. The best method to avoid these dangers would be to decrease the use of air conditioners. The next best thing is to take proper care of our environment, saving the trees and preventing pollution. These activities will help to reduce the temperature of our surroundings. This will also play a major role in preventing global warming that is slowly causing the low lying parts of the earth to be flooded.
